This morning it was raining in Phoenix, Ariz. Seriously. It's been raining for days. Our company holiday party was yesterday afternoon and we had the remainder of the afternoon off. Which was nice, but didn't allow me to prepare for a meeting I had at 9 a.m. this morning.

I had planned to leave early this morning in order to make sure I had things in order for the meeting (that I was essentially running), but of course I was running nearly 20 minutes later than I had wanted to and expected to get to work almost on time instead of 30 minutes early. I had been rushing out so fast this morning that I didn't eat breakfast and didn't check my reservoir.

You can see where this is going, right?

So, I stopped for a biscuit and a soda because it was faster than trying to make something at home that's portable. Yes, I know my logic is screwy; you don't need to remind me. While I maneuvered through rainy streets and rush-hour traffic, I munched on breakfast. There's a certain point on the highway where the traffic usually stops. As I approached that spot, I pulled Toohey from my belt, saw the nearly empty reservoir on the screen and almost immediately knew I wasn't going to make it through the day.

In classic Ralphie fashion, I yelled: "Fuuuuuudddddggggeeee!!!"

I didn't bother to scroll through the screens to find out how much insulin I had left. I bolused for breakfast and really hoped that Toohey wouldn't immediately beep at me. But no luck; I got the low reservoir alarm. I had four units left. Four measly units. That wasn't enough even if I didn't eat anything all day, which I considered, but we had my department holiday lunch today.

I checked the street signs. It was still raining and I was in the far left lane and we weren't moving very fast. It would be another two miles before I could get over to an exit. And to top it off I was roughly 20 minutes from home. Well, screw it, I thought as I turned on my blinker and prepared to turn around.

CRAP! I forgot about the meeting at 9 a.m. If I turned around I wouldn't have time to prepare for the meeting and may risk not making it in time for the meeting at all. And it's not like I could run home after the meeting – I live an hour from work.

The absolutely crazy thing about all this is that I had planned to change my infusion set this morning and would have noticed the low reservoir. But because I was running late and my site looked fine and I didn't want to deal with site-change-day highs on a high-carb lunch day, I decided to wait until tomorrow to change out my site. *sigh* Live and learn.
