Are you hooked on caffeine drinks? They are everywhere! Caffeine is littered throughout cups of coffee, doubled up in cans of energy drinks, and even spilling from D-friendly diet sodas, making it hard to get away from. Maybe this is why so many adults, and teenagers, consume the stuff at a heart-pounding rate. But have you noticed the impact on your blood glucose numbers like I have? It can spike my numbers wicked fast if I am not on top of things. Sure doesn't make my employment at Starbucks any easier, the stuff is diffused into my veins with every breath I take!

I wouldn't say I need caffeine every day, but I am consuming it on most days. I wake up early on the days I work. And it is remarkable how my outlook on the day improves when I get that first drink in me. A push of a button is all it takes to dispense 75 mg of caffeine from the espresso machine. A couple shots later, and I am 150 mg deep. But it doesn't stop there. Suppose I am in the mood to mix those shots into some milk or add some sticky flavored syrup. The carbs add up and the glucose pogo stick primes itself to spring forward.

Even cups of black coffee can uplift my numbers, or an americano made of only espresso and hot water. The caffeine boost gets my adrenaline flowing and throws me into "get ‘er done" mode. I try and plan out an early bolus for my caffeine, but how can I tell how much? I can't look up the carb count because it will just throw a big fat zero in my face. So it has been by trial and error that I mapped out my insulin needs.

What is your caffeine vice? Dare you lay out your Starbucks laundry list... or are you a home brewer? Or do you opt for the cup of tea with breakfast? Fill ‘er up or forget it? Do tell.
