Olivia moved her site to her belly and her numbers have been much better. So thighs are definitely out.
We talked about it the other night - she's sick of using her belly. It looks awful, full of bumps and keloids and just generally mangled. I'm going to call her CDE at Joslin to see if we can start using her arms again. We're also going to start moving her sites out more towards her sides, in an effort to get around to her backside. Not her butt, because she says that really hurts, especially when she's sleeping, but in that area above the belt, where she still has some padding.
She told me that she might want to go back to shots for a while. She's sick of the pump sites and she felt that the shots weren't giving her the scarring that the pump does. I told her she could if she wanted to and for the summer, it might be better. She could swim without worrying about spiking up from taking off her pump. She can go to Six Flags unencumbered (her brother bought her a season pass this year). But she will have to take shots every time she eats something. I'm going to talk to her again, to make sure she really wants to do that - if so, I'll call Joslin and get her some scrips.
Thinking about whether a food is shot-worthy might actually help curb her eating a little bit. She's a snacker and while I don't keep junk food in the house, even apples and peanut butter aren't good for you when you eat too many of them. If she has to stop and think "Do I want to take a shot for this or should I just wait until dinner?" it might break that habit of just having something to nosh on because you can.
When Olivia's pump crapped out over the winter, she did shots for a couple of days and wasn't all that thrilled with it, so this may be a short-lived experiment. I'm willing to give it a try, however. Whatever helps.

Hi
My daughter Madi uses her upper buttocks for her sites. When she tried to take insulin by syringe in her thighs we found that they are too muscular and she did not absorb the insulin well at all so we have never tried them for her infusion set. We have tried to get her to attempt a belly insert, but she prefers to use where they are. Good luck with finding the perfect site for Olivia~
I too us a pump and do use my belly more then I should but I also go almost to my back on my sides above the belt line and below the rib cage I have not done the rear end for fear of pain including sitting in a car etc. I do get small keloids which go away fairly quick with some warm compresses I go use alot of insulin which causes me to change sites ever 2 1/2 day and I do use U-500 in the pump not sure if there is a differance but it is working for me.
Hi, I'm Emily and I'm 13years old. I was on the pump for almost a year when I started doing my belly more than I should because doing it anywhere else hurt sooo bad. Then when i got clost to the 1 year mark, I was put in the hospital because my belly got so hard and notty that the little IV kept bending, and wouldn't alert me. My sugar stayed above 300 and I had large keytones for 2 days. I told my mama that I wanted to go to shots again and I am much happier. If she wants to go back to shots, than I say go for it because I know the pain that she's going through, and trust me, it so no fun at all. Maybe if she changes, she won't get as bad as I did.
