I had a work presentation last Friday where I had to speak to several different prospective clients. I'm not afraid of public speaking, but this was approaching in a much different way. So needless to say, I was nervous beyond all belief.

I was well prepared to be nervous too. I had a Dr. Pepper sitting right beside me at all time and cut my basal in half for the three hours that I'd be speaking to the clients. I also ate a few bites of a chocolate chip cookie before going into the meeting.

My blood sugar stayed fairly stable during the ordeal. I started out at 106, hit 85 about half way through, and dropped to 65 an hour after (when I raised my basal back, too quickly I guess). I've gotten pretty good about handling my diabetes and nervousness. It's really the only emotion that affects my blood sugar, and it always makes me drop faster than a bowling ball.

Luckily, nervousness isn't something I deal with all that often. I have short moments of butterflies from making business calls or the first minutes of a difficult test, but usually those don't affect my blood sugar too drastically. There are times though that nervousness plays a huge role on my blood sugars, like first dates or business meetings.

I started thinking about what it would be like to be a musician though (a friend of mine went to a B.B. King concert the other night). B.B. has type 2 so I started wondering whether or not he has to eat a little more before his concerts or drink juice during the show in order to combat his butterflies.

If I was a rockstar (which would be totally cool!), I'm sure I'd get nervous all the time during shows or interviews. A constant whirl of low blood sugars and adjusting basals. I just wonder what my A1c would be like...
