I wasn't at all pleased with how switching to a 1:30pm Lantus injection was working for me. It was just too stressful to make sure I took it exactly then and too bothersome to compete with a post-breakfast high and a lack-of-Lantus high. So I switched.

I split the dose for 1:30pm and roughly 11:30pm (I say roughly because the last two days I've been scrambling around the mall or at Christmas tree lots getting my mom's house ready for Friday's party). I started with a 20 unit and a 15 unit split (originally was on 36 units). I haven't had a chance to sit down with the logbook (see said scrambling), but I have felt some differences.

First of all is my morning numbers. Those morning lows are back. This morning, a nice and early 55 woke me up...along with my mother on the phone and the cat in my ear. And this is after a 64 yesterday morning which made me lower the 15 units to 12 units.

Unfortunately, I'm still seeing highs throughout the mid-morning, afternoons, and evenings. Especially around 2 or 3pm (which is now my post-breakfast time since it's vacation and I'm sleeping in). So my averages are down, but only to 170.

So my next plan of action in this never-ending course of events is to stalk my blood sugars. I haven't been checking near enough for what elicits even decent control (4 times per day should be nothing for me!). Which means that the next week is going to be a minimum of 8 checks per day. Yes, 8!

Morning, 2 hours post meal, lunchtime (since lately I've skipped that meal), 2 hours post meal if I do eat lunch, afternoon, early evening, dinner, 2 hours post meal, and bedtime. On top of all the checks, I'm wearing the sensor starting Wednesday.

Hopefully with a little careful stalking and a decent CGMS, I can get more of these numbers in line. Mainly, I believe it comes down to seeing how the new Lantus split works. I might try 22 units at 1:30pm today and 10 units at 11:30pm. I'm looking to avoid any morning lows, but also not start out my bedtime numbers beyond a normal range (in the high or low end).

After this next week of stalking numbers, I'm going to start up the Symlin use. I'm really hoping that helps the breakfast numbers come down, which would most likely call for less Lantus throughout the afternoon since I'd be fighting less with 240s or 260s during those peak hours.

If all this works the way that I'm thinking and hoping it will, my A1c and averages should drop fairly quick. And I should be feeling better on the whole diabetes and overall health front in no time. My immune system will build itself back up, the chronic yeast infections will go away, and the general fatigue might be lessened from the lack of fluctuation in these numbers. Hoping...
