Some of you may find this strange, but I typically travel with diet soda.
I should say that I don't load up the car each morning on my way to work (although I do consume one can on the drive in), but whenever we are going to visit a friend or family member, I bring some soda.
What I usually do is stop by the store, pick up several bottles or 12 packs, and take one in with me when I get to the destination. That way, if they all get consumed, I know I have more in the car as backup. And there are no uncomfortable moments when I am leaving if it's not all consumed - I take the leftovers with me.
I have a few friends who always tell me: "George, I know you are coming so I always get diet for you!"
To which I reply: "Great! I will drink yours first and take this home!"
Countless times, I have ditched the idea of not bringing my own soda only to be upset when I find there is plenty of regular soda available but no diet. That drives me nuts!
I know some may call it rude, but honestly, I am a soda addict and I cannot expect you to go shop for everything thing I want when I come over. I think it's the opposite of rude. I'm trying to keep the burden off of you!
Eating dinner or any meal without a diet soda just ruins it for me. I like iced tea and some other drinks, but not with food. I must have my soda for my meals!
Do any of you do this? Most of my family and friends have gotten used to it and just use it as something else to laugh at me about. I don't mind that.
While they laugh, I relax off with a cool drink!

Diabetic Recipes

I take my own diet soda to family gatherings, etc. At the moment, I'm the only diabetic in the immediate family. They all know, of course, and usually have something diet available. However, making the switch from regular to diet sodas was really hard for me and I have about 3 or 4 that I really like and others I hate. For example, I like Coke Zero but don't care for Diet Coke at all. So, in order to make sure that I have something I like to drink, I take mine with me. I'm with you, George
Well, you know I bring my own too! How much did we end up with last Christmas? And didn't we finish every last one of them!! :)
I used to get mad when people didn't have diet soda (pop) for me, but in order to be a nicer person I now have it under my own control!!
I don't think it's strange at all. Plenty of times, I've been to people's houses and brought diet with me because it drives me nuts when people only have regular and I'm stuck drinking water - which I don't like. I try to keep multi-packs of cans or bottles at home so if I'm going anywhere, I can take one with me. I can't stand to pay $1.50 for a single bottle of soda when I can get a 6-pack of bottles or a 12-pack of cans for only twice as much. I'm very neurotic about my soda. How many things can we consume unlimited quantities of without having to think about it, ya know?
George,
I don't take soda everywhere I go, mainly because I try to limit soda consumption for my family. But, I've learned that family do not really think about Riley and his needs. I keep Koolaide 10s with me (juice pouches that are only 2g carbs each) at all times. I don't find it to be rude. I find it to be a neccesity.
YES! I do too!
I am with you. Have diet soda will travel. Though since getting pregnant I am drinking more water and have switched to the decaff soda... But before that, I went nowhere without my diet dr pepper!
Yes! I do this all the time. I hate getting stuck with water. A lot of people (non-diabetics even) are drinking diet soda nowadays, so it always surprises me when people don't think of it. And I do have family that occasionally keeps diet on hand, but I don't want to take that risk, so I bring my own.
Relatedly, I usually tell my friends to bring their own soda when the come to our house. Everyone likes different things, so there's no way I can keep everything on hand. Being in charge of your own beverage mean no one has the right to complain
I not only bring diet soft drinks, I will also bring healthy snacks or fruit or something. I don't care if people think it's rude. (although I will not bring it home with me if there is any left) I think it is very rude to invite someone who you know is diabetic and not have anything they can drink or eat.
Yep, I tend to do the same thing ;)
When I was younger my aunt & uncle would routinely forget to buy diet for parties, family events, etc. so I was always the one with the lunch pack full of sodas. I pack my own sodas every day for work because I can't rely on vending machines in my building.
They'll only get my Diet Coke if they pry it from my cold, dead hands!
I bring diet soda with me or diet ice tea in my thermal mug. You can never count on there being something diet at friends and family's houses. Water gets old and it's hard to be polite and drink diet soda flavors that you can't stand. I also bring my own sweetener. I think coffee without sweetener is a totally different beverage but I bear with it rather than getting a high from sugar.
Having diet with vices should be absolutely erased. It can of course going to have a bad effect on you. Well stick first what your dietitian says.
