Tonight my wife and I will be attending my company holiday party. Now, I will start by saying I am pretty excited about the party this year since we are having it at the Queen Mary. I know my pocketbook would not normally allow for a night at a 5 start restaurant and then to also have a overnights stay in a legendary hotel aboard the ship is pretty exciting!

I am a little concerned about the indulging I will be doing this night. Like most guys, the term "open bar" is more like an "all you can drink challenge" especially if I know I do not have to drive anywhere. I hate what alcohol does to by blood sugar level.

The first concern is my inability to really listen to my body. Maybe it's because I am usually singing Karaoke when I drink too much, with or without music! I just cannot feel my lows when I have had a few. When I go low I get a feeling of being drunk so when I am drunk, I cannot tell the difference which is scary.

Now, I have found that almost every time I drink I go low. I mean really, really low. At first I thought it was because I took too much insulin but in fact it is my body doing what needs to get done.

Now check this out because it is interesting.

When you drink your liver stops releasing glucose in your body and instead starts working to clean the alcohol out of your blood. When I heard about this, two things came to mind. One, is that our bodies do not like having alcohol in them even though we seem to like it and secondly, I must check my BG all night long.

The fact that our livers ignore the other stuff going on and just focus on removal of alcohol tells me that maybe I should limit the amount I take in. I try to help my body out so it will take care of me, why would I put this much pressure on it? I am sure I can have just as much fun with a few drinks instead of a "few too many."

So tonight I have decided to take it easy and just enjoy a drink or two. I have a lot of parties to attend this holiday season so I better figure this out now so I can be around for many more parties years to come!

Do you find that alcohol intake is an issue? Do you tend to experience hypo's when you drink alcohol? How do you handle it?

I understand what you are saying. What is kind of difficult is that the "preferred drink" at many of these social events is Wine. I used to enjoy a glass or two; but wine hypo's me FAST.
So I'll drink a few beers; but that's risky because, while not dropping me LOW, it masks the short-term effect of all the high-sugar foods I eat. My crazy brain then says "EAT!" without taking the proper amount of Humalog due to alcohol's "magic powers." Of course, I am reminded the next morning that I'm a diabetic when I test my bg :-( . Such an inconvenient disease!
