When the new year started, I made a promise to myself that I'd get my butt moving again. 

 

I had, toward the end of 2009, not been to the gym nearly as often as I'd wanted to and I wasn't eating as well as I should have been.  

 

So much had changed in my life between summer and the holidays.  I ended a long-term relationship, started seeing someone new, moved into a new house, and thew myself into the job I'd started last January.  It was overwhelming and the routine I'd been in of gym visits four times a week and watchful, healthy eating took a backseat to all of the changes.

Despite a random weekend of highs, my averages are down from their 165 perch from the past month. My current 31-day average is 156 (weekend highs and all). And I'm celebrating those inverted numbers.

 

The added activity from classes has definitely lowered some of my numbers. I've had a fair amount of lows, although nothing that seems too out of the ordinary for being in control. Some are after walking to class; others are late at night after the activity of the day catches up with me.

At the end of every year I take some time to look back and kind of analyze the year’s past.


2008 was filled with lots of down times. Sure there were things to celebrate but big things, like losing my home, overshadowed my son’s high school band performance at Angel Stadium. I feel awful just thinking that something so material like a home could get in the way of such an exciting memory that my son will have forever.


It’s my fault.


Yes, losing my house was a major cause for my depression and with it, all of the things that went along with it. Having to find a place, move, and tell others the whole story. Trying to make a new place a new home after the one you had been in for over a decade was gone. All big stuff. (READ MORE)

Per usual, I'm tardy.

Resolution #1 in the New Year: I shall try to be more timely.

Actually, I'm not making any resolutions this year. I think I've turned a corner in terms of resolving to lose weight, exercise, eat right, and relax - then not doing any of it. The difference for me in 2007 was that I promised to do nothing - and I did most of the things I would have promised to do if I'd made resolutions.

Go figure.

At the close of December, the year found me down 30 lbs, exercising more and with more vigor than I have since my teens, eating right and enjoying it, in a new - more satisfying - job, getting paid to write (how exciting!). Numbers-wise, I finished the year with an average A1C of 5.7% and my cholesterol levels much lower. (READ MORE)

I just said the other day that I would not make New Year's resolutions this year. But I find myself thinking about them a lot yesterday and today.

I think some of it is caused by the holidays ending and needing a psychological substitute. I know for me, cleaning up the mess and packing away the holiday decorations leaves the house feeling like a clean slate. (READ MORE)

I don't normally make New Year's resolutions, finding them to be just another way to make myself feel guilty about things. And I can do that well enough without adding a list to the mix.


But this year, I have resolved to get more on top of tracking Olivia's blood sugars. I tend to slip about it. I'm great for a week or two and then I let it slide. I forget to ask for her meter for a couple of days and then I think "Oh, well, I'll start over on Monday." But I don't. I forget. (do you sense a theme here?)


This forgetfulness thing is kind of new with me. I'm fairly sure it's because I don't get enough sleep. My youngest daughter - 17 months old - still isn't sleeping thru the night and I'm up 2 or 3 times with her, which plays havoc with my sleep patterns. It can't possibly be because I'm getting old. *ahem*
