Tonight my wife and I will be attending my company holiday party. Now, I will start by saying I am pretty excited about the party this year since we are having it at the Queen Mary. I know my pocketbook would not normally allow for a night at a 5 start restaurant and then to also have a overnights stay in a legendary hotel aboard the ship is pretty exciting!


I am a little concerned about the indulging I will be doing this night. Like most guys, the term "open bar" is more like an "all you can drink challenge" especially if I know I do not have to drive anywhere. I hate what alcohol does to by blood sugar level. (READ MORE)

Last Friday afternoon, this was my Facebook status: "Salty Seniorita. Rum and Diet Coke. Love me a 2 p.m. Friday."

Fridays during the summer around here we get off at 2 p.m. It's a fantabulous job perk, especially when those "extra" two hours or so mean that you can sit at a bar with a friend and have a drink or two.

Several days later a friend posted this in response to my status: "Can diabetics drink?"

It's an innocent question that leads back to a myth that people with diabetes can't drink. At all. I'm not sure what the reasoning behind the myth is, but I suspect it's rooted in beer and fru-fru drinks like daquoris and margaritas and other drinks with sugary syrups and high and/or simple carbs.

Thirty-three years ago this semester, the frequent repetition of those words (or others to that effect) by high school classmates led me to take an extra semester of English in the spring term of my senior year. Anyone stepping onto my school bus and smelling the pungent odor of marijuana burning would have easily understood the reasons behind their lack of preparedness to study.

Turning 21 has been the biggest birthday that I've had in quite awhile. I've been celebrating for the past three days with family and friends. For a birthday that really doesn't mean much to me. Yet somehow, I've turned it into a major event.

Being 21 feels better, just because it feels less like I'm still a kid and more like I'm an adult. Telling people I'm 21 instead of 20 will definitely be nice, I'm sure. But otherwise, this birthday and those numbers don't mean much to me.

Because I've generally decided that I won't drink. So being legal for alcohol isn't that exciting. (However, being legal for Las Vegas casinos is!)
