Many of us have been a-twitter about World Diabetes Day, bringing attention to the epidemic proportions of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and the Big Blue Test. Seattle had a bike ride as did Victoria, BC. Philadelphia had an event at the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. Those of us in the New York City area celebrated with a huge D-Meetup and pizza party. The indefatiguable Allison set things up in a Midtown office building. At its peak, over 20 Type 1s, Type 2s, and Type 3s gathered to enjoy each other's company and take part in the Big Blue Test.

Back on November 14th was World Diabetes Day. I really wanted to do something special to mark the day this year. I decided I would write a song and record myself playing it to try and raise some awareness.

On my drive home from work on Thursday the 13th I started humming a tune that I thought would work. I knew I wanted the song to be my personal feelings about my disease and I wanted it to be empowering. (READ MORE)

In honor of World Diabetes Day, I decided to throw myself a little birthday event. I invited all my friends and their friends to join me for dinner and bowling. Everyone had to wear blue.

A small group of my closest friends gathered for Italian food at a tiny local restaurant. We told stories from high school, laughed till we almost cried, and all proudly wore our blue shirts. We had a group of people point out our shirts, so my friends boldly told them the story behind the color.

The bowling party began as an event for my college Diabetic Echoes group. I made a poster and had a container for donations. Our blue shirts were supposed to make us stand out.

People with diabetes, and those touched by diabetes, follow their journey with the disease through a myriad of winding emotional paths. Depression is very common for those newly diagnosed, sadness can rear its head at different stages in the game, and a little humor and humility can even find the door to expose itself from time to time. The keys for controlling those doors are littered all over the place and on  Wrld Diabetes Day today, you can follow this map of internet hotspots. Expose diabetes for all that it is, good and bad, and then share it with others. Find an emotion and embrace it!

Today I... am recovering from a very emotional evening in which crying ensued for no reason, but I suspect it was due to a string of terrible blood sugars, including swinging from 202 to 53 to 135 within the course of several hours.

Today I... would really like to go in the bathroom and cry. Or just go home and cry.

Today I... am trying not to angrily march over to the next cube and show the lady talking about how bad her allergy shots hurt all the infusion set scars on my belly.

Today I... considered talking to my coworkers about World Diabetes Day, but I don't have the mental energy.

Today I... am struggling with a funk I've been in for about a week that is likely due to not having even one in-range blood sugar reading unless by accident, miracle or lack of food.
