Most will call it dry mouth or cotton mouth , some might say they have a waterless windpipe or a parched palate, acting disturbed by their unquenched uvula, and yet another might compare it to having a mouthful of sweaters mucking up the place to no end. Whatever alliterative or clothed name it goes by, the sticky mouth feel of a high blood sugar is enough to furrow my brow to its limit. (READ MORE)

Last night at church before band practice I yanked my infusion set out. How? I am not sure. Here’s what happened.

On Sunday our projector at church overheated. The only way to reset it after an overheat is to unplug the unit. The problem is that unit is mounted to the ceiling which is extremely high! We have a giant ladder that seems to weight a ton that we can use to get up there but it takes 4 men to move this thing down into church and into position.

Somewhere in the set up of the ladder or break down I must have pulled it out but honestly I never remember anything tugging it.

About an hour and a half later during band practice I started feeling warm. I am never warm. Then my head felt like it was going to explode. I stopped in the middle of a song, one that I could not figure out how to play even though we have played this song a bunch of time, and I tested my blood sugar. (READ MORE)

Life is full of simple pleasures.

Today I slept in until 12. I made some coffee. I drank about 4 cups. I had a nice little breakfast. I turned on the tv and actually caught a decent movie. The movie was, "The Broken Trail" with Robert Duval. It was about some good ol' cowboys taking some horses about 800 miles or so through some beautiful country in Wyoming. The movie really hit home with me this morning. I love to be outside. I love that I am country guy and that I am in my element when I am out in the wilderness. I love a good fire and a good meal. Sometimes I am happiest with just a cup of coffee and maybe a smoke if I feel like it.

Bottom line is today I was depressed.

I had a nice breakfast, watched that great movie, drank my coffee, and then tested my sugar.

I was in my truck today picking up some fast food from Mickey D's. I typically don't eat fast food. Actually, I never do- but today I was in a hurry and I just wanted to get something fast and not have to put to much thought into it. As I was ordering, I realized that with diabetes there is no such thing as just a "quick little meal". Any time I eat something, I have to put some serious thought and effort into it. Everyday, I put serious energy and brain power towards calculating things in my head.

My life revolves around eating and calculating.

I had another interesting experience today. I was in a restaurant and an older woman sitting at a table near me began to get sick. She was vomiting a little and the people she was with, her son and her friend weren't exactly sure what was happening. Her waitress and the restaurant manager were obviously and understandably a little nervous. Other people began to talk and wonder what was going on and then finally I heard those famous words again, "I'm diabetic". So I went over to her and I introduced myself, eerily similar to my "diabetic angel" experience. I asked her what was going and told her that I was also diabetic. She told me she had been having some high sugars and she hadn't been feeling well. She said her blood sugar was in the 400's earlier and she had just taken 6 units to get it down.

This little lady was so sweet.

“What about honey?”

We came back to "Honey" 4 times in this exchange. I was going nuts.

Here is the deal, I am working at a church retreat in a few weeks and I was approached by the person in charge of food for the weekend regarding food choices. Apparently there are going to be some other people with diabetes attending the weekend and they thought they would get my suggestions. (READ MORE)
