I will not be walking in this Sunday's Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes.

I will not be walking in costume.

I will not be walking out of costume.

I will not be walking.

I will be running... the New York City Marathon.

Note that I did not say "running in the Marathon", but "running the Marathon".

Don't go swimming right after eating lest you drown. -- Advice to schoolchildren, circa 1970.

When our gradeschool teachers started teaching us the basics of physiology, they taught us that blood brought oxygen and nutrients to our brains, our digestive systems (simplified to "stomachs"), and our limbs, and that these three systems were constantly battling for better allocation of resources.

According to our teachers, our brains always won out because they had to control the rest of our bodies.

Our legs came second, for survival reasons. The concepts of "adrenaline rush" and "fight or flight" were simplified to our grade level.

Like a fever, it just breaks. It finally did for us, today. Thank God. Five days of runaway high blood sugars. Now that the dust has settled, it appears as if we've just emerged from a growth spurt. Gives "growing pains" a whole new meaning.

If daily life with diabetes is a battle, then this occasional week of hell is a bloody battle along the lines of Braveheart. It's a drunk and belligerent Mel Gibson in blue-painted face slinging swords and anti-Semitic remarks at us for a full week.

The fact that we have weeks like this from time to time does not make it any easier. It's not even that Charlie's blood sugars were super high. It's that they stayed in the 230 to 310 range for so long. Full days where we couldn't get his blood sugar below 200 no matter how many basal adjustments and site changes. Happy New Year, diabetes!

If my online presence has seemed a bit sparse this week, it's because most of my time has been "off the grid".

Without going into the sordid details, we have been without gas and electric for the better part of the past week, and will probably remain so for the next two or three days.

After church I typically end up sitting down with a few of the members I get to see once and week and catch up.

This Sunday I was sitting with Paul. Paul is an older gentleman who is witty, funny, and sharp as a tack. I believe he is in his late 60's and read all the bible verses that day in church. He used to be a radio announcer so he has an awesome voice.

We asked each other how we were doing and I felt compelled to share my weekend of ridiculously high blood glucose readings.

"I have been sky high all weekend and cannot get my blood sugar down," I told him, not sure if he could sympathize.

Last Thursday was opening night for Godspell.

Our church has never done a musical before so being a part of it was special. I auditioned back in February and was hoping to get the John the Baptist role. In fact, I had been practicing that characters parts months before auditions.

My pastor (and director) felt that I should have another part. The lead. Jesus.

I was not excited at first. In fact, I was quite nervous and thought that I should be the LAST person to play Jesus. I am definitely not worthy but my pastor saw something I didn’t. (READ MORE)
