This is a bit of a rant. I get on this horse periodically, ride it around, waving my flags and guns, foaming at the mouth a bit, going slightly nutty. You'll get used to it. Or ignore it.


What is the deal with lumping both types of diabetes together? Seriously. If I have to read one more freakin' article about how high fructose corn syrup causes diabetes or get one more stupid email from some clueless acquaintance, telling me that if I just put my kid on the Atkins diet, she'll be cured, I'm going to go to the top of the water tower and start picking people off. OK, maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but holy cow, does it make my blood boil.

One of the more heated discussions going through the diabetes online community is whether or not type 1 diabetes should be renamed to avoid it being lumped in with the public perception of type 2 diabetes. "Don't blame me because my pancreas decided to crap out on me!" is the rallying call -- implying, rightly or wrongly, that type 2 diabetes is always caused by the person with diabetes, through a combination of poor diet choices and poor lifestyle choices. Many people with type 2 diabetes -- particularly the young, fit, and not-obese -- also take issue with that perception.

MikeDurbinMike was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes on December 29, 2008, and congestive heart failure the very next day. Talk about a double whammy for anyone, let alone a 24 year old.  He didn’t have to come up with New Year’s resolutions that year; his doctors did that for him.  That kind of humor has been instrumental in keeping him, and those around him, going over the last year and a half.
