Children with Diabetes

I called my supply company today. A very good company that provides me with all of my pump supplies - including batteries and IV preps - thank you very much! Here's how the call went:

"Hello, this is Nicole Purcell calling, I'm due for my supplies so I'm just calling in."

"Oh, OK, hold on a second."

I hold on, hearing her type-type-typing.

"Oh, you're a pump."

"Excuse me?"

"You're a pump, just hold...o..."

"Excuse me, before you transfer me, I need to tell you that I am not, in fact, a pump. But I am a person that wears a pump..." Letting that little gem hang out there for an uncomfortably silent few seconds. "Hello, are you still there?" (READ MORE)

In yesterday's post I talked about going to my first insulin pump class. I said that I was a little leery about going and that I wasn't sure what to expect. Well, after spending about three hours learning about the pump I'm still not sure. I guess I'm just not ready to switch over to this method of diabetes control. I still can't imagine being hooked to that little thing all the time! I realize that I could still remove it and go back to the manual injection routine, I'm JUST NOT READY YET. One thing I did learn was that I might be ready for an "insulin pen".

Multifamily Utility

It took me nearly two months to finally get a solid range of good blood sugar numbers. Many checks would have me hovering in the 200's, only to be followed by a bottomed out low caused by a flagrant over-correction. The devil is in the details when it comes to pumping and I started out with the wrong details! (READ MORE)

So I try to be a good person with diabetes who sees his doctor when he is supposed to. Who gets his lab work done every three months. One who checks his blood glucose level six to eight times a day. All that good stuff.

So as a pump user, I am told to order my supplies when I open my last box. That was almost a month ago and guess what I did when I opened my last box?

Yup. I went online and ordered my three month supply of infusion sets and reservoirs. I should be good to go. I pat myself on the back and wait for a conformation email to arrive.

Like a prom night flashback, I wait and wait to hear from someone while my heart sinks deeper into the "why me" realm as time ticks by. (READ MORE)

This morning I have my first ever "pump class". Ever since I was diagnosed, I have been on a multiple daily injections routine, so needless to say, I am a little nervous about this class. I am not really sure what to expect. I was told to be there from 8-12 and that lunch would be provided. Although I am nervous, I am also excited to learn about this new way to take care of my diabetes.

Christmas means joy. Christmas means tales of sugar plums dancing in children's heads. Christmas means Christmas dresses.

This past holiday was my first pumping Christmas, which meant learning how to "graze" and square bolus at all the parties, how to watch for trends from "holiday stress" and how to buy a Christmas dress fit for a pump.

Typically, finding a dress is hard enough. I'll try on one hundred to find one. Some are too fancy, some are the wrong color, some are just ugh! But never has one been unfit for a pump. Until this Christmas.
