Somewhere between work and sewing the overgown for my most recent renaissance-faire visit, I managed to miss Friday's Blog Action Day. It's not something I feel I must participate in, but it's an occasional source of inspiration -- especially when it's a topic that can be turned on its ear.

This year the topic was water -- in particular, access to clean drinking water. Washing water. Safe, parasite-free water. Something that is lacking in many parts of the world. (At least one episode of Bobby G, Adventure Capitalist showed the eponymous individual playing a major role in bringing safe drinking water to a Nicaraguan community.)

I don't do well with change sometimes. Ok, most of the time. Well... honestly, almost all of the time change throws me for a bit of a loop.

I am moving my healthcare from 4 doctors 50 miles away to 1 doc who is 15 minutes away. I was going to get an endo here, but I don't really need a specialist endo, at least not at this stage. I can't afford the fancy MD/PhD nutritionist who was fabulous. I'm not having any more babies, so I don't really need an ob/gyn (debatable). My former primary care doc just left her practice and opened a retainer-based center (much too pricey even with my old paycheck and insurance). It was the "perfect storm" for a big healthcare change.

A friend of mine has just found a new endo and is loving it. I'm very excited for her because I know how much trouble she went through with her last endo. I remember telling her the difference between her reluctant-to-listen-to-the-patient doctor and Dr. C: "After having never spoken to Dr. C about Symlin before, I came into his office for a regular check up, said I wanted to try Symlin and 15 minutes later the nurse was hooking me up with a sample pen."

While I had a lot of freedom when I spoke with Dr. C, I have often wondered how much latitude he gave me because he knew how involved I am in the diabetes community, knew that I was up on the latest information and technology, and was proactive. I was sad to leave him behind. (Maybe there's a little too much ego there, but I really got very little resistance from Dr. C about anything.) (READ MORE)

When my dLife mail showed up in my inbox with Melissa's Diabetes Viewpoint column When It's Time to Change Doctors, it really clicked with me.

Lately, I've been having problems with my endo. Granted, I'm pregnant and extra needy these days, but I just feel that I'm not getting the personalized attention that I deserve and need.

Truth be told, I never see him any more. Once I month, I come in to his office, wait for what is often an eternity (despite intentionally scheduling for "slow times") and when my name is finally called, I get to see a nurse instead of the doctor.

Every other week, I e-mail my blood sugar logs to the doctor, along with any questions or concerns I have and a brief update. For a while, it was mostly, "Things are going good. I hit a little bump, but I upped my insulin and it smoothed out." (READ MORE)
