It used to be that "back to school shopping" meant two or three new outfits, new shoes and sneakers, and a short handful of "school supplies" -- one or two notebooks, paper and dividers, writing implements, a pencil case, and maybe a ruler.

 

For good or ill, those days are long gone.

Today Susanne is meeting with the guidance counselor, Charlie’s teacher, the school nurse and the principal to go over our revised 504 plan. Someone from the district will also be there to make sure everything is legit. I wish I could be there with her but I can’t get out of work.

 

Sometimes I wonder if we’re going overboard with our 504 plan. It’s sounding less like a constructive 504 plan and more like an unreasonable list of demands.

 

Take item #4 for instance.

Three of my last four blood sugars have been under 100. Two of those blood sugars have been under 50. I haven't increased my insulin or even eaten much less. I actually decreased my basal overnight because I was 99. By this morning, I was 47.

 

Because my blood sugars have been so out of control in the last few months, lows are few and far between (for me, at least). Usually, three lows in a twelve-hour period wouldn't be that confusing. Yet I'm perplexed. I haven't started getting back in control consciously so there is no excuse for these lows. Actually, I should be running a little high considering that I'm fighting off a cold.

Being back to school is the hot topic lately. For me, being back to school is a big change. Not only do I move away from home again every semester, but also my schedule is constantly changing. The stress is different. The food is different. The exercise is different (walking an extra 3 miles a week around campus). My control is different.

 

Over the summer, I really watched what I was eating. I finally got my other health issues sorted out and had the potential to lose the weight I had gained because of them. I was motivated. So I started limiting my portions, choosing "smarter" carbs, and decreasing my overall intake of carbs.
