Today, the first Friday of February, is national "Wear Red" day in honor (or observance) of Women's Heart Health Awareness, as spearheaded by the "Go Red for Women" campaign. So of course I will be wearing red to work and I've been handing out Red Dress pins.

There have been a couple of recent threads on LinkedIn regarding the definition of a "cure" for diabetes.

As everyone here who takes insulin will agree, diabetes cannot be "cured" by diet alone. And as everyone whose diabetes is currently controlled in part, or entirely, by diet and exercise will agree, just like "insulin is not a cure", "eating the right foods" is not a cure, either.

Merriam-Webster defines "cure (noun)" in our sense as the following:

Put aside the images of the Kingston Trio's Boston-area rewrite of "The Ship That Never Returned" and think instead of a group of riders, runners, walkers, or drivers following one after the other, or a flock of migratory birds, or any group trying to travel a significant distance, using the strongest to protect the weakest from wind and weather, each member of the group taking a turn at the front to allow the others to recover.

"Did you see this?" my dad asked pointing to a picture of Paula Deen on the cover of People magazine.

"Yeah," I said. "I wish she wasn't getting so much flak."

If you haven't met Paula Deen, she's a colorful character on the Food Network. She speaks with a thick Southern accent and says "y'all" more times than you can count. Her dishes are rooted in the South and are definitely fat-laden. These are not the types of dishes you want to build your meal plan around. These are not the types of dishes you want to eat at every meal. Geez, people should get that. Everything in moderation.

This topic came up in one of the diabetes forums that I'm a member of. Someone wanted to know what we thought about the whole situation.

Last night, I participated in #dsma, a Twitter event for the diabetes online community. It happens every Wednesday at 9pm EST. I've joined in a couple of times before, but never gotten into it like last night. I've been really focusing on Twitter the last few weeks and finding connections with the DOC.

#dsma is crazy. It's fast paced. That hour goes by like lightning as you're trying to read all the other tweets, submit your own, and truly make an impact with fellow D tweeters. It's insightful and it's thoughtful. For that hour, you are thinking about the diabetes community, how to connect, how to integrate different ideas, how things apply or don't apply.

You may have heard by now. Medtronic has announced the FDA approval and U.S. market launch of a remote monitor that will allow parents or caregivers to view CGM results from another room. This is incredible news! I have long been dreaming about this. Incidentally, I have also been dreaming about having a poodle named Jenga that is lost. But that is beside the point, I reckon.

I immediately called Medtronic upon hearing the news. I was so excited, I could hardly speak. I just wanted to reach into the phone, hug the guy and say, "I love you, man."  That is, until he told me the price.

He mentioned that he had already sold a bunch to parents and that earlier in the morning he had a woman crying tears of joy.  When you think of, it is such a simple enhancement to CGM management and a natural evolution yet so necessary; so important. It changes so much for parents.
