I lost it yesterday.

 

It was hot and sticky yesterday evening and we had been at a barbecue to welcome our new pastor into town. After having a great time, we headed home to unwind, get some laundry done, and basically get ready for the work week ahead.

 

When I walked into my house it felt like a sauna. It was terribly hot and stuffy. I turned on the air conditioner to cool things down a bit and gathered up my laundry to do. As I walked through the living room I realized the cool breeze I usually get hit with from the vent was nonexistent. I stuck my hand up in front of the vent and felt a very faint draft but that was it.

I just got home from playing two softball games tonight and I am not very happy. The first thing on my mind is that we lost. On top of that, I just tested my sugar and I was way too high...300 to be exact. "OH MY GOD!" I was mad! I could have sworn that I took the necessary steps before the games.
Let's back up to the pre-game diabetes ritual. "Let see, I don't want to eat too much food before exercising." Tonight, I choose chips and dip and a bagel. "Ok, time for a shot of insulin." I factor in what I just ate and how many hours the games will last. "Six units should hold me over". When I get to the ballpark, I test my sugar and it's 131. I'm happy; but, just to be on the safe side, I gobble down a banana and some orange juice so I have no chance of getting low. (READ MORE)

My job interview went well. I think very well. I am getting more and more excited about having the opportunity to work with this organization. I am still holding out on the name of the company for certain reasons. In due time though, I will be able to share with everyone. In the mean time, it's time for a little VACATION!!! My girlfriend and I are heading down to Florida for a few days and WE CAN'T WAIT! We will be soaking up some major sun rays, relaxing on the beach, and maybe even flying through the air on some bad-AS* roller coasters!

When I was little, I imagined a perfect life. I picked careers, pretended to make life-changing decisions and pictured my future. Nothing was affected by realistic needs and the facts of my life. I could be anything and never worry about discrimination in the workplace. I could live anywhere and not stress over medical access or insurance. My mind was limitless.
Now I make these life-changing decisions for real: I pick future careers, places to live and potential spouses. Now I have limits. My decisions factor in my diabetes and my future with diabetes. I look at things like job requirements, insurance benefits and personal reactions to my diabetes. Everything is affected by it. (READ MORE)

Olivia handed out her information sheet to her teachers yesterday.  I just typed up something short, informing them that she has diabetes and what to do if she's running high or low. I stressed that she can treat in class and that she only needs to go to the nurse if she's under 60. 

 

I also stressed that she needs to be accompanied to said nurse.  I found out at the end of the year last year that one of Olivia's teachers wouldn't let anyone go with her.  Fortunately, Olivia's never passed out from a low, but that's not a chance I want to take.  Olivia informed me of this towards the end of the year and I talked to the teacher and the nurse about it, but according to Olivia, it didn't do any good.

With a tainted past of endless symptoms ranging from irregular periods to joint pain, I am constantly looking for new ways to manage my life. By manage my life I mean that I look for new techniques to relieve stress, I change my surroundings to optimize my happiness and I closely examine the medical choices I have to make. This all started about three years ago. Right after my senior year in high school, I started experiencing an array of symptoms. Slowly, they all compounded leaving me with an entire page of bullet points of things going wrong with me. Yesterday I talked about how weightlifting was my key to success. It helped improve my life with diabetes on so many levels. I also talked about how my training these days has evolved and become more specific to my ever changing needs.

I want this blog to be about you and your training. I want to use my Blogabetes entry today as a platform for all of you to give a brief description about the types of things that you are doing for your exercise. I understand that not everyone is going to have the same type of answer. I realize that some of you may hardly be doing anything. THAT IS OK! Some of you may be training for a marathon. Some of you may walk around your neighborhood each day. The point that I want to make here is that this IS A GREAT place for all of us to share with one another the types of things that we are doing and how they are affecting each of our lives.

One of our readers, Teresa, has some questions for the Blogabetes readers about diabetic retinopathy. Has anyone had retinopathy surgery and can share their experiences with Teresa?
"I have a question that I was unable to find an answer for, and couldn't figure out how to post a new blog. I have type 1 diabetes and have had it for over 30 years. I have retinopathy and have had many surgeries. I now have cataracts as a secondary problem of the surgeries and my doc wants to remove them, I have done some fairly extensive research on the two (retinopathy and cataracts) and have found that most articles agree that cataract surgery speeds up the process of retinopathy. Has anyone here had this surgery as a person also with retinopathy?
Does anyone know more about the complications?
