Patti LaBelle is on the TV singing about how a certain glucose monitor changed everything. "Back then, food was the enemy," she says. My mind flashes to a host of studies I've come across recently touting different foods as the "cure." I can't help but see the humor in it.
We all know diabetes and food are so closely linked that often it's hard to deal with daily diabetic life without feeling like you have a major eating disorder. And while these new studies shouldn't give anyone a license to eat with abandon, it's nice to see research money being spent investigating food and nutrition, instead of new drugs.

Just a few days to go until Halloween; the first of the food holidays. The stores have been stocked with trick or treat candy since Labor Day. I have fallen for that trap before - buy treats for the kiddos in early October, then again the next week and again the next because the candy keeps getting eaten up. The past 2 years I got wiser and don't buy the Halloween candy until less than 5 days to go. (That's not as smart as it sounds since we have not had a single trick or treater since we moved into this house in the woods 4 years ago!)

We try really hard to stay away from high fructose corn syrup around here, although, man, that stuff is in everything! Even bread. I think there are two or three brands that don't have it.
Olivia used to drink a lot of diet soda. I'd buy a couple of 2 litre bottles every week for her, in addition to drink mixes like Crystal Light. Sometimes I'd make diet Kool-Aid, using Splenda instead of sugar. One week, I added up how much of my grocery money was going towards diet drinks and was apalled - it was easily $10 or $15 a week.

If I could do one thing the next 3 weeks, it would be a vacation from my type 2 diabetes, weight issues and actually, my health entirely. Even one day seems like it would be divine.

I would eat pastries for breakfast, and have another one or two for a morning coffee break (I do love me some carbs). Perhaps a nice Eggs Benedict. And oh, yes, I would have pumpkin spice lattes until I shook from the caffiene.
I would eat homemade cream of mushroom soup for lunch, or a nice lobster bisque, full of heavy cream. Then I would take a nap, just because I wanted one, not because my blood glucose was at 200.
Homemade cookies with full-sugar cocoa and lots of marshmallows for afternoon snack.

It's Turkey Day. A day full of family, gratitude, and carbs. From the sweet potato casserole to the pumpkin pie, Thanksgiving Day is filled with carb-laden goodies that can wreak havoc on blood sugars.
This year will be my second Thanksgiving with the pump. I don't even remember handling last year's Thanksgiving challenges. However, I do remember Christmas very vividly.

I love eggnog. Just adore it, and the fact that it's only available 6 weeks a year only adds to its allure.
The full fat full sugar, richest, yummiest version has about 60 calories an ounce. That's without the rum or the bourbon.
Even the "light" version has 26 grams of carbs in 4 ounces, 25 of them from sugars. As usual the light refers to low fat, not low carb.
I've looked around for a healthier recipe. There are a lot out there. Let me eliminate about 60% of the recipes by saying I don't want soy milk in mine. I know, I know, soy milk is so yummy and healthy and
yada, yada, yada, but I just don't like it.
I saw a couple recipes that use sugar free vanilla pudding in lieu of eggs and cream to thicken. I'm going to try that one.

Thanksgiving reminded me of my diagnosis. No, diabetes wasn't on my "thankful for" list. It's actually around the time of year when I was diagnosed.
Thanksgiving 2003, I had what I thought would be my last slice of pumpkin pie. My aunt made it, using my grandmother's "secret" recipe (hint, it's on the back of the
Libby's can). Since I was about to be diagnosed with diabetes, I savored every bite.
My diagnosis came pretty much by accident. On Wednesday of that week, I went to the doctor thinking I had a urinary tract infection, but that wasn't the case. My urine sample showed a lot of sugar and a finger stick pretty much confirmed the doctor's suspicions. I was still send for lab work-a fasting glucose and an a1c test-but as the doctor said, glucometers don't lie.

OK, I really don't hate
Halloween. In fact, I really like the "holiday". I love to see well-done costumes and to watch my children have so much fun gathering all that candy and showing off their costumes. It's fun to watch them have fun. Even my office-mates enjoy the black-and-orange season. This morning we all walked downstairs to see the parade of three-year-old preschoolers come through in their costumes while trick-or-treating at the downtown businesses. We oohed and aahhed at the pirate, the princess, the flower and the pilot.

The girl leaned her head out of the car window as if to ask me for directions as I raked the leaves from the flower beds in the front of my house.
"Hey, can I rake your leaves?" she said.
It is so rare to encounter a random act of kindness. And when it happens, it truly takes you by surprise. But maybe Oprah is right. Maybe there is a movement happening. People are really starting to "pay it forward." I've been hooked on her new reality show
The Big Give, where contestants on the show give money away and offer a helping hand to people in need.
"So shines a good deed in a weary world," I thought to myself as I said "sure" to the girl and approached her with my rake.
