I haven't ACTUALLY basal tested in awhile (by that, I mean I haven't done it the right way, but surely I've watched my numbers fall in patterns). I usually eat the same things for breakfast, so to me basal testing for the morning hours seems a bit ridiculous. But the last few days of numbers have me thinking that a basal test is in demand.

 

I've been trying to check after meals more regularly so that I can see if I want to go on Symlin later. But these new numbers have me wondering what is going on inside this body of mine.

I am a need-to-know person. You could call it curious or nosey. I'm an information junkie. All of which could explain my profession.

 

If I have high or low blood sugar, I want to know why. I want to know the reason behind it so I can adjust accordingly.

 

So, when I experienced nearly a week of pretty elevated blood sugars, I assumed it was due to my new infusion site. I have been trying (apparently unsuccessfully) to move my sites outward from the middle of my lower abdomen. After the first branch out recently, I tried to give the site some time to settle in. But after several days, I knew it was a lost cause. So I changed the site early and despite my desire to go back to where I knew I'd get good numbers, I moved outward again. Still, I got several days of unacceptable numbers.

I woke up at 383 today. To say the least, I'm angry. I have a reason as to why it was so high, but it still doesn't make complete sense. I ate a late high-carb meal last night (back to college life) and thought I'd judged my carbs correctly. I actually figured to wake up low. But obviously, diabetes had another plan in store for me.

This morning, getting ready for work. I looked at the scattering of dots on my thighs from old pump sites. And then I wrote this...

 


We test, we write it down - we test, we store results - we test, we examine results - we test, we make decisions about what to do next.

 



 

We eat, we calculate - we eat, we guess - we eat, we dose - we eat, we hold our breath and hope we've done everything right.


 

We take our medication, we adjust our doses - we take our medication, we wonder if it's the very best medicine for us - we take our medication, we hope that it serves our body well - we take our medication, and wait for the next big advance.

I had never considered myself a numbers girl. I had always thought that I was, in fact, the furthest thing from a numbers girl. In high school, I sat - bored and unengaged - through Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus. In college, Statistics was the one course that found me with a grade below a B. Logging. It is something every diabetic should do. It is important in terms of identifying patterns and making decisions about dosing - and it is vital to figuring out when you need to be paying more attention and where your problem areas are in the course of a day. I remember the bad old days of handwritten logbooks. They were cumbersome and not at all useful, even when they were kept up and brought to the doctor. Technology has come a long way and there are many great tools available for logging everything we need to be tracking. But, for me at least, logging is still an excruciating task. (READ MORE)

I'm always looking for easy, fairly fun ways to control my diet. I usually just keep a running track in my mind of what I've eaten in the past few days. Sometimes this helps me say no to the cookies or the extra servings of something yummy. Other times, it just makes me feel guilty that I can eat so poorly and not seem to care.

I am proud to say that I still have every log sheet I've ever written, most of which are pretty comprehensive. If it will offer some perspective, I had a perinatologist once (not my own, but someone I was talking to in another capacity) tell me he thought my logging practices were a little overkill.
You can tell, though, when my efforts start to fade. Of the 10 sheets in my purse, some days are filled out completely, some just have what I ate for breakfast and my fasting sugar. Most, however, are blank.
I actually enjoy logging. It might sound cliché, but logging helps me see patterns, keep track of what I'm eating and know what my blood sugar was in certain situations. But, often, as quickly as I decide to start logging (again), the practice is abandoned. (READ MORE)

I took Charlie to his endo appointment yesterday. It was the first time we didn't come with an unraveling scroll full of questions. I had no questions because I believe they have no answers.
It's not that Charlie is doing so poorly. His latest A1c of 8.2 was his best ever. But his numbers have been rough since school started and patterns have become difficult to spot.
A pair of medical students entered the room with big smiles and lots of questions. I couldn't help sounding very matter of fact and slightly defeatist.
"Yes, we're counting carbs correctly. Reading labels, subtracting fiber, all that fun stuff," I said.
"Yes, we have the Calorie King book."
A social worker came in next. She looked young - like she just came from cheerleading practice. (READ MORE)

Saturday was one of those random days for my diabetes. I have been thinking about it and I have come up with a few ideas about why my sugars were off. For one thing, it's the weekend and I ALWAYS seem to have difficulty keeping things on track. I am sure that all of you out there can relate to this. Saturday and Sunday come around and sleeping patterns go out the window! All throughout the work week, I get up about the same time each morning; eat the same size breakfast and then go through my typical work day. Well, then the weekend gets here, and I am eating at completely different times and having irregular meals. And when it comes to physical activity on the weekend, I am either extremely lazy or working exceedingly hard. (READ MORE)
