As some of you may have read in my biography, I am very active. I really enjoy exercising. Really. I actually do enjoy it. And I am not talking about just getting on a treadmill everyday. Honestly, I haven't even been on a treadmill in months. I just love moving around. I have found it is great for my body and for my diabetes. I do so many things that I don't have enough room on this page to tell you about all of them. To name a few though, I particularly enjoy weight-lifting, martial arts and doing just about anything involved with the outdoors. (READ MORE)

As I've said before, patience is not something we can call one of my good points. When I started Byetta, I really expected to feel something different-nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite-almost immediately. I was sorely disappointed when it took several weeks before I started feeling any of that.
But after a good month's worth of the medicine was coursing through my body, I started the higher, maintenance dose of Byetta, and, I'll admit, I expected to feel different almost immediately. This is really sort of silly, but I was pretty disappointed to feel roughly the same as I had the week or so prior to starting the higher dose. I was starting to wonder why we had to be weaned onto this drug if it wasn't going to make me feel any different. (READ MORE)

I get up every morning. I test my bloodsugar, give a morning dose of insulin. I decide where to place my pump in the outfits I'm considering. Some mornings, I wash away pump stickiness in the shower and insert a new canula. Some mornings, I treat a low bloodsugar, quaking and pale at the kitchen counter. All of this, while feeding the cat and getting ready for work. Drying my hair and putting on lip gloss. Trying to find the right shoes and grabbing a book to read at lunch. Diabetes comes with routines that often fit, tucked quietly, into the other routines my life holds. (READ MORE)

Life is stressing the crap out of me right now. Can anyone else out there relate to me? I think it is so funny how one moment your happy enough to run around the room in your underwear and then the next second your contemplating things like your life, your family, and your future. What's up with that!? Maybe it's just me? I don't know? What kind of stress is going on in your life? For me, I am dealing with a career change and a move.

In yesterdays post, Lantus and late night lows, I discussed lowering my basal dose. I had read an article where a type 1 diabetic endocrinologist proposed taking less insulin for someone my size. I was taking 17 or 18 units of Lantus each morning and he stated that I only needed about 12-15. I have tried my new morning dose of 15 and so far I feel I need a few more "test run" days.

What you don't want to hear from your diabetes educator is "hmm, good question." That is, unless it's immediately followed by a good answer.
There has been a burning question of ours since Charlie started on the pump back in September of 2006. During that time, we posed the question to several different people along the way, but never really got a clear answer.
So I present this burning question to you - the true gurus of diabetes.
How can Charlie skip a meal if he wanted to? Is this a mythical notion or do people out there actually achieve this? If Charlie didn't eat something two to three hours after a bolus, he would most certainly go low. I'll ask you exactly what I asked the doctor and nurse practitioner the other day. (READ MORE)

Kerri, our buddy ol' pal here at Blogabetes, sent us bloggers some writing prompts the other day. One prompt that hit home with me was writing about what people can do during these cold months to stay active and keep the pounds off. It is a natural process for us as humans to throw on a few extra lbs as the cold weather starts to approach. With that in mind, I for one, really enjoy working out in MY VERY OWN LIVING ROOM. Even as dedicated as some of us are to working out, it is still a pain to get out into the cold. Nobody likes running to their car, scraping the ice off, and waiting for it warm up just to drive to the gym!! It is hard enough for people to be motivated on the warm days. That's where your living room and your creativity come into play.

With a few weeks to go still until the baby gets here, I feel like I'm really starting to get some parts of motherhood down. Particularly the worry part.
I worry when my blood sugar is high, I worry if it's low. I worry if he's not moving around much and if he's moving around too much, I worry that he'll be a hyperactive little boy and I won't be able to handle it.
In addition to the concerns surrounding the effect my diabetes could have on the baby, I encounter the regular mommy worries, too. I want him to be healthy and happy. And to grow up to make a difference in this crazy world.
But like many of my diabetic mommy friends, one thing I worry about most is passing diabetes on to my child. Sure, there are a lot worse things that could happen to him out in the world, but living with diabetes day in and day out is something I'd rather not have for my son. (READ MORE)
