I've recently learned that if I want to get something accomplished, I'd better make a game out of it. Like when I wanted to try to save money on groceries, I played the Grocery Game . And when hubby and I decided we needed to cut back on spending, we instituted No Money Mondays, where we don't spend any money on Mondays.
Now that I'm trying hard to get back on the weight-loss track, I've decided a new game is in order. I'm calling it "Five For Five." The rules are simple; I focus on five healthy habits for five days a week. For each habit I successfully accomplish each day, I earn one point. If I've earned 20 out of 25 points at the end of the round, I earn reward. (READ MORE)

I guess it's time to admit that I didn't do too well with my August goals. While I continued walking most days and drank so much water that I got up in the middle of the night to pee more than in the third trimester of any of my three pregnancies, my goal to lose 8 lb. to 10 lb. and limit myself to just one soda per day were quickly dashed.
I'm not exactly sure why, though, which kind of bothers me. I will say, though, that I was losing weight,except that the same 4 lb. I was losing I kept gaining right back. I think I tried to rationalize my junk food eating with the walking. Seems that my thought process was that as long as I was walking I could still eat the junk because walking every day was better than not walking every day and still eating the junk. (READ MORE)

I find that dinner seems to throw my sugars off worse than anything! I guess I just can't help myself whenever it gets to be chow time. I LOVE ME SOME FOOD! It never fails; I'll go through the whole day and not have one high sugar and then BAM! Hyperglycemia CITY!

My eyes get way too big for my stomach!

Usually I'll come home after a long day, start raiding the cabinets and throwing random stuff together, next thing you know, I got a plate a nachos, some peanut butter cookies, and a Popsicle!

I know, I know, I am supposed to eat healthy all the time...or something like that. I don't want people to think that because I'm a trainer that I eat perfect every day! I'm only human!

I found some old blood work results from 2002 and was comparing them to my recent results. In 2002 I was a newlywed and had not had gestational diabetes yet. The only inkling I had of any blood sugar problems was a strong family history of type 2 diabetes and a diagnosis of hypoglycemia when I was 19.
My numbers are exponentially better today. Fasting sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL; you name it. This got me to thinking about my health and lifestyle today versus 5 years ago. I may be 5 years older but I should be feeling 10 years younger!
The biggest change, health-wise; is that I no longer smoke. 27 years of a pack plus a day are history. I have been smoke free for almost 22 months now, this alone would bring up my HDL levels. I remain very proud of this and it continues to remind me that I can change old ingrained habits. (READ MORE)

Last week, I started a new "game" with myself. I call it Five For Five. I focus on five healthy habits for five days, earning points as I go and working toward a reward. Each week, the points accumulate for an even bigger reward.
I'm proud to report that I earned 23 of a possible 25 points last week. My daily habits were drinking three liters of water, exercising for at least 30 minutes, doing 25 sit-ups, testing my blood sugar three out of four times and not eating any junk. I expected finding 30 minutes to exercise each day would be my biggest challenge, but it turns out that wasn't the case.
The two points I missed last week were for sit-ups. The first one, I'd gotten as far as 15 when the little boy started having a melt down next to me. I thought I'd get back to the other 10 in a little while, but the day got away from me and I forgot. Then on the last day of the game, I didn't do them at all. (READ MORE)

When I go grocery shopping, I rarely buy junk food. If there's a big game (Yeah, sorry about last night, all you Rockies fans. Sort of sorry anyway. OK, not really sorry at all....), I might buy a bag of chips. Once in a great while, I'll buy brownie mix or I'll make cookies. It's not a regular occurrence around here, however, mainly because we don't have the money in our grocery budget to buy crap like that and also because, well, it's crap. Of little or no nutritional value.

One of the main reasons, though, is because Olivia will just eat it all up. A pan of brownies will be gone in a day. A bag of Doritos? Two sittings. It's ridiculous.

So, here it is almost a full week into September and I haven't set any goals for myself yet. Haven't put a pretty, lined sticky note on my computer monitor to remind me what I'm working toward for the next four weeks. Maybe it's because I started ignoring my August goals so early in the game.
It wasn't long before I was looking at that blue sticky and thinking to myself that I should just take the darn thing down already. I mean, the only thing I was really sticking to-save a bad cold-was walking at least five times a week.
While I didn't meet my goals of testing after every meal and limiting myself to just one soda per day, I will say that having those goals staring at me did some good. I tested more often, although not often enough; and I did limit my soda intake, although not one per day; and I did dramatically increase my water intake. So there was quite a bit of good that came from setting those goals. (READ MORE)
