5 out of 7 days! That's right - I exercised 5 out of 7 days last week! Wooooo-Hooooo - yay me! Ok, so it's overboard but I need to congratulate myself a lot for it to have any affect. I have what's called an external locus of control for motivation (take a quiz on yours here) - in other words if you tell me 'good job' it means much more to me than if I say it to myself.
Exercise does make a huge difference in my sugar levels, my fasting level today was 88!
I have been using stars on our kitchen calendar as motivation. Yes, the little star stickers that teachers use. Blue stars for 15 minutes or more, silver for 30 minutes and above and the elusive gold star for an hour. Sounds silly and I felt silly about it until I started getting a glow seeing the stars stack up on the September page. We all have to find what works to motivate and reward ourselves. (READ MORE)

Now, about this time, I ought to tell my friendly hairdresser that I really need to retest. That it'll only take a minute. That I'm a bit dizzy. But I don't. And I have this irrational and overwhelming urge to laugh as I picture myself pulling a Steel Magnolias'-style Shelby freak out in my own, hometown version of Truvy's Salon. Still, I don't say anything, as I am wrapped in a smock and my hair falls in small, trim-length strands all around. Everything is a bit turned around. The older lady from earlier is STARING at me again. I wonder what she's thinking.
I wonder if she thinks whatever I've got is catchy. I'm sure I look a fright. I try to focus on staying upright as the cut is finished and my hair is styled. When it's done, I sit in the chair too long, trying to gather my things, throwing away the spent juice bag and mentos wrapper. I test gain, 5-4-3-2-1... "41 mg/dl." Oof. Not so hot. (READ MORE)

It seems to me that nearly every female in the diabetes online community has thyroid issues also. I got curious about this and did some reading. Nearly a third of Type 1 patients have thyroid disorders, usually an underactive thyroid. It does indeed affect more women than men. This is because if you have one auto-immune disease, like Type 1, you are at higher risk for another. As if people with diabetes need another challenge. The linked article also cites a higher than normal incidence of thyroid disease in Type 2 diabetics, but no statistics are given. (READ MORE)

"Sana Sana Colita De Rana" which is Spanish for "Heal, Heal. Butt of a Frog!" LOL Yeah, I swear.
It is usually said to little kids when they get hurt. You may call it a "boo boo" or "let mommy kiss the boo boo and make it better." The whole "frog butt" part is really used as a distraction. It's hard to worry about a stubbed toe when grandma just said something about a frog's bottom! (READ MORE)

Went to the elementary school art show last night. Lots of lovely art hanging from the walls, displayed in the cafeteria and in the classrooms. Paper mache dragons. Ceramic tribal masks. Robots made from junk. Seems Charlie's series on oceanic creatures urinating in the wild didn't make the cut. Whatever. I guess the art teacher and I will agree to disagree on what is art. I didn't see one thing getting peed on.

Seeing Charlie interact with his little classmates is a major highlight for me. Especially on a night like this where there's a little red carpet buzz in the air. Kindergarten girls with their tiny voices, saying "hi Charlie," in unison as they pass him in the hallway, absolutely makes my day.

I am sitting in the waiting room at the hairdresser, flipping through a magazine that highlights what celebrity stylists are doing with hair that is blonder, smoother, tamer and thinner than my own. I'm tired -but I've worked all day - so that's normal. My appointment was a half hour ago, so I think that my feeling totally annoyed is probably justified. It's not until I see two heads of the same extension-filled yellow hair on a pair of identical faces staring at me from the same shiny magazine page that I realize - something could be amiss with my blood sugar. Am I a man, or even a person- or just a type with an age? Should I be mad at what they think-what kind of war should I wage?
"You can overcome diabetes and make it part of your past" But as an autoimmune, I declare that their thinking should not last!
"Check your blood sugar; you seem to be having a bad day" Must it always be related to diabetes in every way?
"Should you be eating that brownie, too much sugar you know" Should I explain the meaning of bolus and my expertise in insulin flow?
"Why, here, did you go so low- you really deserve this excessive blame" It is just one bad day- not always easy to play this daily game! (READ MORE)

Last week when I suggested that the diabetes community design an awareness symbol akin to the breast cancer campaign's pink ribbon, I apparently hit a nerve with someone.

Nordtorp says he's not into the secret handshake thing and that ribbons and pins don’t make a difference. He doesn't think that wearing a trinket will cause more money to be funnelled into diabetes research.

I have to say that I whole-heartedly disagree. If someone asked you what are the major illnesses -- chronic or otherwise -- that affect the U.S. population, would the common person identify diabetes as one of them? Without a connection to diabetes, I doubt it. Does the common person even really understand what diabetes is? Not many.

Remember a while back, when I said Olivia was a pretty compliant, easy-going kid? Yeah, well karma just came and bit me in the arse. Holy mood swings, Batman!

I don't know what's going on with her (besides the fact that she's a 13 year-old girl), but I'm about at my wits end. She's sullen, she's mouthy, she's on the phone all. the. freaking. time. But what's really pissing me off is her failure to check her blood sugar.

Up until a week or so ago, I'd ask her every time I saw her eating something and before every meal, if she'd check. She'd say yes or no, depending, and everything was fine. Suddenly, though, I'm getting this attitude.

"Did you check?" I'd ask.

HUGE, HEAVING sigh, pffffing of the hair and a long, drawn out, sarcastic "Yessssssss, Mother, I diiiiiiiiiiid."
