I spend a lot of time thinking about if I will ever have complications from my diabetes. The very thought of diabetes problems scares the crap out of me. My determination to ward of complications has a direct correlation with how I control my sugars on a daily basis. In other words, every time I treat a low or a high, thoughts of amputations or blindness are running through my head. Those fears are some BIG MOTIVATORS. I don't want to come across as the guy who just sits around and waits for something bad to happen. I am not the type of person who just mopes around hopelessly or just sits around thinking of nothing else but diabetes issues. I try to stay positive most of the time. My glass is usually "half full" rarely "half empty." (READ MORE)

To describe diabetes in three words is very difficult. That's because at any given time, your thoughts and feelings about this disease are changing. So I guess one word that comes to mind is unpredictable . It is important to note, however, that with better control comes more predictability. I think I view my diabetes as little bit more unpredictable because I have trouble keeping my sugars regulated. I feel a person who can maintain an A1C of 6 can predict their blood sugar a lot more accurate than a person with hemoglobin of 8. Maybe I'm wrong though. Another word that I would use to describe my diabetes is unfair.

A friend of mine died last night, following a battle with lymphoma. The disease came back last summer after he had been in remission about a year. It was discovered about a week after my daughter was born. The prognosis was not good with a recurrence within a year at mid-life. He was only 45 and left two teenage children.
We had fallen out of touch in recent years, but I knew through his sister that he had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. (READ MORE)

My family sat down for dinner last night and I was feeling frantic and stressed and generally not in a good place. My fasting sugars have been a little high and I'm sure my post-lunch have been too, with all the goodies available at work.
The tragic Colorado church shootings took place Sunday just a few miles from my home. My 4 year old has questions I don't know how to answer.
This is crush week for us for the holidays. If it's not shipped or mailed by Friday, it very likely won't make it in time. 95% of our friends and family don't live in this state so I have to be done this week.
Halfway through dinner, the 5 month old started crying. Not a light fussing, but an full-on screaming crying -- something was DEFINITELY wrong with her. Kate does not do this very often. It ratchets up my stress level immediately. I feel SO bad for her and guilty (of course) that I may have done something to cause it. And there's the worry that something is seriously wrong.
