My girlfriend's calling me a diabetic angel, and not to brag, but I kind of feel like one. I experienced some kind of intervention yesterday, or at least something bigger than me, that connected me with a stranger.

According to the dLife style guide my editor sent me, "diabetic" is used as an adjective for describing conditions, supplies, and other things related to the disease. It is not used describe a person.
Yes, it's really underlined in the style guide-that's how serious my editor is about it! The preferred term is "person with diabetes" or "living with diabetes." Never use the term "diabetes sufferers."
As a writer who has spent the past decade working in print media, where word counts are the law of the land, I haven't been able to grasp the concept of using three words in place of one. (READ MORE)

How often has this question been debated?
Olivia doesn't care what she's called. She calls herself diabetic often. I'm the one with the issue. I always say that she has diabetes. To me, calling her a diabetic makes her only her disease.
On dLife a couple of weeks ago, Jim Turner said that he was always a diabetic, that diabetes was what he thought about, what was going on in the background all the time, no matter what else he was doing. He was, first and foremost, a diabetic.
I can understand that thought process, but I don't agree with it. Yes, diabetes takes up a lot of space in the brain and it's not something that can be shoved aside and forgotten. You always have to take it into consideration. But you take it into consideration along side your life. Your life as a person. A person with diabetes, yes, but a person with a life. A person who is a sister, daughter, student, drama queen and soccer player as well as a person with diabetes. (READ MORE)

I must admit that I do wonder how in the *&%^ing world Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler manages his sugar during what I can only assume to be an intense several hours every Sunday. I asked a friend of mine, who has type 1, how she managed her sugars when she recently ran a marathon. They were, predictably, up and down. But from a novice's standpoint, it seems like she may have had more luxury of stopping to treat a low or deal with a high. There are no TV timeouts in community marathoning, though.

When a professional sports team – and all that comes with it including your job, sponsorships, advertising, ad nauseum – are essentially riding on whether or not you can throw a football to a guy 50 yards down the field without getting sacked, the stakes are a little higher.

I took Charlie to a party on Saturday. It was in a large, old church hall with high wooden rafters and lots of wide-open space. When we opened the door, Charlie sprinted like a racehorse out of the gate, joining his friends who were busy whipping rubber balls at each other's heads at high velocity.

We had already discussed that we were going to pass on the pizza and Charlie was cool with that. Although many college students (and my high school humanities teacher) would be of a different opinion, Charlie does not like being high all night.

Charlie has an interesting way of describing things. He tends to invent his own words that end in "er." For example, for a party like this one, he would typically wonder if there was going to be a "jumper" there. Translation - a trampoline.

When Charlie started school, I just knew he'd provide me with plenty of material to blog about. Which is good, because we do have our dry spells when he's not doing anything particularly diabetish.
A good journalist goes out and gets the story even when there seemingly isn't one.
"Come on, Charlie, I've got a story to write! Do a little something diabetic for daddy for heaven's sake! Anything!"
"OK, here's the scene: You're blood sugar is pretty high. You're super mad at the world and you don't know why. Maybe you'd like to destroy something of emotional and monetary value? Mommy's English bone china tea cups perhaps? What? Did you hear that? I think the green cup just said you wear pink underpants." (READ MORE)

Imagine for a moment that I found a magic bottle with a a genie who popped out and offered me ten diabetes-related wishes (because I'm swell and clearly deserve more than three). Of course I wouldn't be allowed to just wish away my diabetes altogether. (It's the small print that gets you every time). I might ask the Beedies Genie for the following:
-- Hallucinogenic metformin.
-- A couch with special cushions that will make my body burn calories while I sit on my butt and watch Battlestar Galactica.
-- A super smart version of phentermine that can fool the body for longer than three months.
-- A line of Converse diabetic Chuck Taylors-- For that matter, any diabetic shoes that are both affordable and don't look like they were designed either for Peter Boyle in Young Frankenstein or the whole cast of Cocoon.
-- Mandarin Orange Propell at every beverage fountain. (READ MORE)

Ever since I was diagnosed with diabetes, I have always wondered about how celebrities with diabetes are doing with their control. I remember the first celebrity I found out had diabetes was Halle Berry. When I realized this I guess I was a little "amazed". Looking back, I feel pretty stupid about being shocked that a CELEBRITY had what I had. For some reason, hearing that news was good news. I remember saying to myself, "Yes! That's GREAT!." I was so happy to see that EVEN DIABETICS COULD STILL BECOME FAMOUS! Maybe I am a little selfish, but don't we all want fame and fortune ;) (READ MORE)
