It started last night. I guess it was right about the time I got home. I'm not sure there was one source or if it was a combination of things or if it was just one of those afternoons. I was cranky. Really cranky. Like drive me out to the middle of nowhere and leave me there kind of cranky. Even I didn't want to be around me.
It was close to an hour before it occurred to me that my crankiness might be due to a high blood sugar. I sighed. It all comes back to diabetes in one way or another, I thought angrily. I tested, and, sure enough, I was high. Really high, in fact. Over 300 kind of high. No wonder I was acting so terrible. (READ MORE)

Yesterday I was crankier than usual. A lot crankier than usual. I mean, I was the poster child for "Woke up on the wrong side of the bed." At one point The Mr. looked at me and asked how I was doing.
"Eh, I'm aggravated," I said, eating something sweet.
"Why?"
"I don't know. I've been like this all day."
It's hard to know if I'm just having an off day or if something diabetes related is making me cranky. Used to be that being high made me cranky--especially around my kids. But not too long ago I learned that I can get awfully cranky when I'm low, too. That was a kick in the head!
Self management means so many different things. There are so many factors and variables to consider with diabetes. Since I was cranky, I immediately blamed myself and assumed I was high. But blood sugar check upon blood sugar checked revealed mostly normal numbers. I wasn't high nor low. (READ MORE)

I'm often told what a wonderful mother I would make.
I'm often asked if Bob and I plan to have kids of our own.
My answer is usually something along the lines of "Who knows? Maybe someday we'll decide to adopt or foster children, but it's not likely I'll be giving birth anytime in the future."
This is around the time in the conversation that I get "the look." Sometimes, the person will express out loud what "the look" says so clearly. "It's the diabetes, isn't it?" (READ MORE)

I came across this article recently from the BD Newsletter and it got me thinking about how Olivia behaves when her blood sugar is high.

Normally, she's your average teen-ager. She's sometimes sullen, sometimes goofy, sometimes talkative, all in a five minute span. But when her blood sugar is high, she can become weepy, rude, argumentative and very, very unpleasant. The really high highs make her feel sick, but it's the somewhat high highs that I loathe.

When Charlie started school, I just knew he'd provide me with plenty of material to blog about. Which is good, because we do have our dry spells when he's not doing anything particularly diabetish.
A good journalist goes out and gets the story even when there seemingly isn't one.
"Come on, Charlie, I've got a story to write! Do a little something diabetic for daddy for heaven's sake! Anything!"
"OK, here's the scene: You're blood sugar is pretty high. You're super mad at the world and you don't know why. Maybe you'd like to destroy something of emotional and monetary value? Mommy's English bone china tea cups perhaps? What? Did you hear that? I think the green cup just said you wear pink underpants." (READ MORE)

I have a confession: I haven't exercised since before Thanksgiving. E-gads! Ugh, and I'm so feeling it. My pants are feeling tighter, I'm more tired, I'm more cranky, it's harder to bend over and tie my shoes, blah, blah, blah.
There are so many excuses I could hand out for this (stress being a big one), all of which would come back to me staying up later (right now it's almost my bedtime and I should be getting ready for bed and not writing, for example) and, therefore, having trouble forcing myself out of bed in the morning. I tried blaming it on my alarm clock, too, but I think even that is a cop out.
I absolutely hate making New Year's resolutions. I can never stick to them and I never have really taken them seriously. I don't really know how to get myself to stick to that kind of goal. (READ MORE)

Early fall wind blew threw the house as No. 1 and I sat at the dining room table. He was doing homework and I was keeping him company while going through the mail. The girls were alternatingly reading to each other and turning the TV up so blaringly loud that even No. 1 started to scold them like a parent.
Between writing spelling words and their definitions, No. 1 said, "Dinner smells good, Mom."
"Yeah, it really does," I said, thinking I should check the timer on the chicken I had baking in the oven.
It was a Wednesday evening and the fourth day in a row that I had made dinner instead of saying I was too hot, too tired, too annoyed or too lazy to do so and taking the family out for dinner. It had recently occurred to me that we didn't eat out nearly as often when No. 1 and No. 2 were toddlers as we seem to now that No. 3 is a toddler. I hated realizing that. (READ MORE)

Olivia has a tendency to run high after exercise. I don't know why, I just know that she does. What we usually do is have her eat something light an hour before practice and bolus her a little more than usual for the carbs eaten - usually 30% more. It seems to work, although like many things with this stupid disease, what works one day might not work the next.

Last night, Olivia got home from soccer practice and said she'd taken out her site because it was hurting her when she ran. I told her that was fine, but that she should take a shower and we'd put in a new one when she was done. This was around 7:15.

And just stop it Cadbury or Mars Inc. or any other bogus chocolate maker trying to come out with your own peanut butter and chocolate treat. Stop it! You're embarrassing yourself. None of you come even remotely close to the brilliance of the Reeses Peanut Butter Cup formula. When the kids get such wannabe candy dropped in their Halloween bags, I instruct them to throw it back from whence it came, like a home run ball to center field from the opposing team. (READ MORE)

luck

Thursday night, I decided to stay up a little too late (or early, we shall say). My mother always warned me when I was younger to monitor my blood sugars closely when I threw my sleep cycle off. I never figured out why, because I always seemed to be fine. What does me being a night owl have to do with blood sugars?

 

But Thursday night was an extreme. I didn't get to bed until just before the sun was rising. I made sure to sleep in as long as possible (and managed 6 hours of sleep) just to make it through the day ahead of me.
