I was discussing diet with a friend of mine last weekend. We were talking about her mother, who is borderline type 2. I asked if her mother was watching her carbs and she said yes, that her mother had cut out almost all carbohydrates, but her blood sugars were still fluctuating all over the place.
When I asked what she was eating, my friend responded with "Chicken, fish, lots of fruit and yoghurt." I just kind of goggled at her. "Fruit? And yoghurt? Those have carbs in them, you know."

Since becoming a "Weight Watcher," I have noticed the amount of stress in my life has increased. Having diabetes means I carry around a bunch of stuff with me where ever I go. I have my
Glucose testing machine, strips, lancets, glucose tabs, and not to mention my carb counting book.
And now I have to add my Dining Out Guide which gives me the point values to restaurant food, my sliding scale for figuring point values, my tracker which I log my points in, and the Food Guide that has point values for all kinds of foods. So you see, I have more stuff to remember these days then I did before.

Ever since I was diagnosed with diabetes, I have always wondered about how celebrities with diabetes are doing with their control. I remember the first celebrity I found out had diabetes was Halle Berry. When I realized this I guess I was a little "amazed". Looking back, I feel pretty stupid about being shocked that a CELEBRITY had what I had. For some reason, hearing that news was good news. I remember saying to myself, "Yes! That's GREAT!." I was so happy to see that EVEN DIABETICS COULD STILL BECOME FAMOUS! Maybe I am a little selfish, but don't we all want fame and fortune ;)

Family. Health. Necessities.
We were all thankful for so much as we shared our turkey feast this year. We are spending the Thanksgiving weekend in Albuquerque New Mexico this year with my sisters and mother. Having to make a 13 hour drive made me thankful for
low carb snacks and caffeine too.
The thing that stands out as I contemplate the meal last night was the laughter I heard and participated in. I laughed a lot. We brought up old memories of family events and funny stories. Joked about each others habits and quirks, and just laughed at my kids and my nieces being silly. It was a lot of fun and so comforting.
One of the few qualities I have is the ability to make people laugh. I love to poke fun at myself, the world, and pretty much everything! I am also good about not being mean but just funny. All and all it was a very good time.

I'm always looking for easy, fairly fun ways to control my diet. I usually just keep a running track in my mind of what I've eaten in the past few days. Sometimes this helps me say no to the cookies or the extra servings of something yummy. Other times, it just makes me feel guilty that I can eat so poorly and not seem to care.

2007 is behind us now. It blurred by and stamped in key moments that will surely be remembered. My past year with diabetes stacks upon only a few others since I was
diagnosed. 2008 will mark four years since that day in the hospital and it seems like I'm always
learning something new. Each highlighted moment in this year taught me a little more about how I successfully live with diabetes.

Yesterday I attended a lunch meeting with a company that we are looking at to update our current company's website. When I arrived at the office I checked my
BG before I left the car.
135. I was going to correct for it but since it was 11:30 I figured I would wait until we ordered food and take care of it all at the same time.
When I got to the office and met with the web designer we quickly sat down and began discussing our needs. It was a really good meeting and I liked what he suggested as far as some ways to drive more business our way but I started to notice a very foreign feeling in my stomach.

Prior to the
birth of my son, I'd never been in the hospital before. I know the nurses have experience treating diabetes, but I was still worried about how my blood sugar would be managed.
Every diabetic reacts differently to the same situations. And living with the disease day in and day out for a few years-and managing to keep my
a1c under 6 the whole time-really makes me an expert in what works for me and what doesn't.
What doesn't work for me is white flour, white rice, white potatoes, sugar or corn syrup. What does work is lean protein, healthy fats, whole grains, vegetables and fresh fruit, and, most importantly, food combining.

Up and down. That's the way it's been lately. Numbers are up, numbers are down, nothing is making sense, patterns are confusing, emotions are frustrating. I've seen some wildly high numbers in the past week or two that are completely blowing my mind. Go to bed at 109 mg/dl, but wake up at 5 am in the 300's.
