When you see the check-mark-y swoosh, you think Nike, right? An apple gets you the computer company, golden arches make you think of cheesburgers, a peacock will have you thinking Must See TV, a red cross... you get the picture.

 

And when it comes to health there are several very recognizable symbols of support, perhaps the most popular is the pink ribbon for breast cancer. I was doing some research today on breast cancer and realized that the pink ribbon is quite possibly the only symbol synonymous with only one health condition. Even the red ribbon went from AIDS to a host of other causes.

 

You see a pink ribbon you instantly think breast cancer; you see a red, green or yellow ribbon and you have to do some thinking or asking. While many diabetes organizations and associations have their own symbols, there is not one that is universal for diabetes.

A study published in the December edition of Diabetes Care magazine (an ADA publication) examined the links between diabetes, depression and mortality in older adults.
Not surprisingly, untreated depression led to a much higher death rate in 5 years than if there was depression intervention. Intervention was either an anti-depressant or psychotherapy.
It is difficult to take care of all the aspects of this disease on a good day, when you're depressed it's nearly impossible. How hard is it to go out for your daily walk when you just want to keep your head under the covers? (READ MORE)

Patti LaBelle is on the TV singing about how a certain glucose monitor changed everything. "Back then, food was the enemy," she says. My mind flashes to a host of studies I've come across recently touting different foods as the "cure." I can't help but see the humor in it.
We all know diabetes and food are so closely linked that often it's hard to deal with daily diabetic life without feeling like you have a major eating disorder. And while these new studies shouldn't give anyone a license to eat with abandon, it's nice to see research money being spent investigating food and nutrition, instead of new drugs.

This is World Diabetes Day, the first annual, and the international community is embracing its message by flying high the striking blue symbol of the disease. The message is about waking up the world to the growing impact of diabetes on our young and old- this year's theme focusing on children and adolescents. The innocent faces of the disease give a hammering reminder of what we are striving for, worldwide awareness, more scientific breakthroughs, and a much needed cure. (READ MORE)

Today the world unites as one as we celebrate and promote WDD awareness. Frankly, it's about time it got the recognition it deserves.

 

Since its inception in 1998, the Washington Dentists Directory (WDD) has been the premier destination for professional dentist profiles and patient reviews in Washington state. Dental offices throughout Washington will show their support today by illuminating their offices in blue - the official color of floss.

There was a time when I went around promoting my son's diabetes like a ring announcer for a boxing match.
And now, wearing a green Old Navy tee-shirt with white trim and a blue Minimed 522 insulin pump; weighing in at 44 pounds and holding the record for 17 low blood sugars in a single day; pumping out of Philadelphia, PA , The Type 1 Machine Gun ,

In honor of World Diabetes Day, I decided to throw myself a little birthday event. I invited all my friends and their friends to join me for dinner and bowling. Everyone had to wear blue.

 

A small group of my closest friends gathered for Italian food at a tiny local restaurant. We told stories from high school, laughed till we almost cried, and all proudly wore our blue shirts. We had a group of people point out our shirts, so my friends boldly told them the story behind the color.

 

The bowling party began as an event for my college Diabetic Echoes group. I made a poster and had a container for donations. Our blue shirts were supposed to make us stand out.

Long day.
Long day after a long night after a long day after a long night. Tired. Very tired.
Not in mood tonight to negotiate with Charlie when he throws a minor tantrum because it's shower time.
Angry dad voice comes out. I hate my angry dad voice. I hate using it on any of my kids, but I'm especially regretful after the fact with Charlie.
Charlie whips his head back on to the couch and then lays face down on the floor. I've asked him five times now to come up with me for a shower.
"Charlie! Get. Upstairs. Now!"
He crawls upstairs slowly on hands and knees like a weak desert wanderer searching for water. "Can't," he moans. "I'm so tired."
I'm certain he'd be up the stairs like a leopard if said let's play a video game.
"Charlie! Now!"
The voice in my head tells me he can't be low, you just tested him. Don't fall for it. He's just being a 5 year old not getting his way. (READ MORE)
