I knew it was coming. The inevitability of a binge sat in the back of my mind like a cat gearing up to pounce on its prey. You know, the way he eases on to his back legs and shuffles back and forth, twitching his nose until the unsuspecting mouse/bird/snake isn't looking his way?
At the grocery store, I spent quite a bit more than I had hoped on routine groceries. As I was unpacking I realized that it was because of all the junk that found its way into the cart-despite my constant please to the kids to Put That Down! They say not to shop when you're hungry. I'd have to add not to shop when the cookie monster is raging inside you. Interestingly, though, when I left for the store it wasn't with junk food in mind. It's almost as if the store brainwashed me into thinking I had to have this stuff. (READ MORE)

Lately, I've spent much of my morning walk being pulled by a 90-lb., 11-month-old German Shepherd. Seeing as I walk so early in the morning--when it's still quite dark outside--I decided that yelling "Sarge! No! No! No!" isn't really the best thing. I don't want the few people who are awake at that hour to think someone is in distress. Well, I guess I sort of am in distress, but not the kind that requires police intervention! While I often welcome the push Sarge gives me to walk just a little faster, mostly it's annoying.
I typically look at the clock on the VCR as I'm walking out the door and it's usually the first thing I see when I gingerly open the front door upon my return. I like to see--and compare--how long it takes me to do my 1.57-mile walk. I'm averaging around 25 minutes lately. (READ MORE)

I have a confession to make. Last week, I went on a post-partum shoe shopping binge. I don't know what came over me. One minute I was walking through the door at Marty's and 20 exhilarating minutes later, I was walking back out with four boxes in tow.
I am thoroughly in love with my purchases. I bought cute brown pumps to wear with the brown pants my aunt handed-down to me after she lost 30 pounds; a pair of comfy brown Ugg-like clogs that match my brown winter coat; black ballet-flats that are sure to get Stacy London's seal of approval; and a stylish pair of black tweed pumps to wear to church. I find that dinner seems to throw my sugars off worse than anything! I guess I just can't help myself whenever it gets to be chow time. I LOVE ME SOME FOOD! It never fails; I'll go through the whole day and not have one high sugar and then BAM! Hyperglycemia CITY!

My eyes get way too big for my stomach!

Usually I'll come home after a long day, start raiding the cabinets and throwing random stuff together, next thing you know, I got a plate a nachos, some peanut butter cookies, and a Popsicle!

I know, I know, I am supposed to eat healthy all the time...or something like that. I don't want people to think that because I'm a trainer that I eat perfect every day! I'm only human!

I've seen a lot of blog posts lately about restarting a fitness program, or starting again to tighten up blood sugar control, or losing weight.  I have posted on these subjects myself.  Many. Many. Times.

 

I got to thinking the other night about what causes my failures.   And how I could do it differently, with better results.  The past few years I have met Einstein's definition of insanity - doing the same things over and over and expecting different results.

 

 

I go into this with the idea that it's for LIFE.  Never again will I binge on malted milk balls.  I will work out EVERY DAY the rest of my life.  I will check my sugar 4 times a day minimum.  You get the idea.  It gets overwhelming very quickly.

With all the talk of New Year's Resolutions and dieting, I keep coming across advice to keep a food diary. The articles usually point out that research shows keeping a food diary "even for just one day" can aid your weight loss efforts. (I haven't been able to find these studies, but maybe I'm just using the wrong search engine or key words.)
Keeping a food journal has been part of my routine for a very long time now. In fact, I have several editions of notebooks dedicated to logging every morsel of food that goes into my mouth (along with blood sugar readings and insulin dosing, of course).
It's also a cornerstone to the Weight Watchers program. "If you bite it, write it" is a common phrase heard in meetings. My leader, Kim, started what we call "The Magic Traveling Journal." The 12-week planner gets passed around to a different group member each week. (READ MORE)
