Kerri, our buddy ol' pal here at Blogabetes, sent us bloggers some writing prompts the other day. One prompt that hit home with me was writing about what people can do during these cold months to stay active and keep the pounds off. It is a natural process for us as humans to throw on a few extra lbs as the cold weather starts to approach. With that in mind, I for one, really enjoy working out in MY VERY OWN LIVING ROOM. Even as dedicated as some of us are to working out, it is still a pain to get out into the cold. Nobody likes running to their car, scraping the ice off, and waiting for it warm up just to drive to the gym!! It is hard enough for people to be motivated on the warm days. That's where your living room and your creativity come into play.

Yesterday I talked about how
weightlifting was my key to success. It helped improve my life with diabetes on so many levels. I also talked about how my training these days has evolved and become more specific to my ever changing needs.
I want this blog to be about you and your training. I want to use my Blogabetes entry today as a platform for all of you to give a brief description about the types of things that you are doing for your exercise. I understand that not everyone is going to have the same type of answer. I realize that some of you may hardly be doing anything. THAT IS OK! Some of you may be training for a marathon. Some of you may walk around your neighborhood each day. The point that I want to make here is that this IS A GREAT place for all of us to share with one another the types of things that we are doing and how they are affecting each of our lives.

Today was another one of those weird diabetes days. As you may have read in an earlier post, I recently began using a
Novolog Pen. This is quite a transition for me since I have had diabetes for 14 years and I have only used two different methods to control it. Well today, I learned a lesson with the pen. I forgot to do an "air shot" test. This is where you dial up a dose and then inject it into the air to make sure that insulin will actually come out. Instead of doing the air shot, I just dialed up the dose that I needed for breakfast and then injected myself and left for the day. After three hours had passed I was ready for another snack so I tested my sugar to see where I was at.
The meter read 340.

A pilot in Denton, Texas, made an emergency landing near a freeway yesterday because he felt lightheaded. Only one media source stated he was diabetic. Yet the article made every major newspaper in the area.
Thursday, I drove down the highway in rush hour traffic digging through my bag and eating everything I had with me. As I stuffed the glucose tabs into my mouth, I sat wondering about my fellow drivers. Were any of them diabetic? Had they driven this low before? Would they be mad because I was driving low (granted we didn't reach speeds above 15 mph)?

My mom and I were making the second round on our neighborhood walk. Before I left the house, I didn't do my usual pre-walk routine. Typically, I check my blood sugar and lower my basal by 40% for two hours. I'm not sure how I forgot to do all that, but it never even crossed my mind.
That was until I started to get really tired. I felt fine. No butterflies in my stomach. No fog surrounding my thoughts. Nothing to set off the LOW warning in my head. Except that I was dragging. My legs could barely move. My mom was steps ahead of me, walking at our normal pace.

We all know the importance of exercise and the many benefits we get from it. Today I would like to give some ideas about different ways to achieve a solid workout. Many of us have daily or weekly routines that we follow. We spend each workout doing the exact same thing as before. I want to stress the importance of mixing it up.
For example, if you are a die hard cardio fan then try adding in some various resistance exercises. Let's say that you take a walk each morning for 45 minutes. You might walk the exact same trail at the exact same intensity. Next time, consider the following variations.

In anticipation of my end of the month endo appointment, I have to go for fasting blood work this week. I'm dreading it. To me, this one of the most inconvenient things in the world for several reasons.
First off, it has taken years for me to get into the habit of eating breakfast. Now that I'm a regular at the breakfast table, I'm completely hooked on the most important meal of the day. I can't leave home without it.
Second, I don't think its safe for me to drive on an empty stomach. It's kind of like not drinking liquor on an empty stomach. It's just a bad idea. I'm low, I'm shakey, I can't see straight. I'm liable to curse at anyone who crosses my path, even if they do have the right of way. Granted, the doctors office is down the hill and around the bend, literally 3 minutes away. But still, I'm not fond of driving before eating.

My job will be ending sometime this summer. Consequently, I am investigating our health insurance options. Since hubby is self-employed, we have always covered the family under my work policy.
Now, I know that "health care in this country is in crisis"! I know this is a huge touchpoint for political candidates. Yes, I know all this intellectually.
Now it's PERSONAL. COBRA, offered by my employer by federal mandate, is more than a house note EVERY month. Private insurance is still pricey - more than what we paid on 2 car notes. And it carries a $2000 deductible per person. Some sloppy math later and it could be $15,000 a year before they pay any expenses for us.
