Well here's something I didn't see coming: Sugar-Free Chocolate Chip Girl Scout cookies. I walked into the lunch room at work and there, on the stainless steel countertop, rested this never-before-seen box of cookies.
"Where did these come from?" I asked my co-worker.
"No idea," they said, through a mouthful of crumbs. "But they're pretty tasty."

(I love when people without diabetes can't tell that they're eating something less crammed with sugar than what they're used to.) (READ MORE)

I've been mysteriously absent from the blogging world again. My apologies! I've been busy with baby and holidays, and keeping myself healthy despite the viral-cold-winds that are a-blowing. With a school teacher husband, it's hard to keep germs out of the house!
I thought I'd touch base with a quick recap of the last few weeks.
I took the month of December off of blood sugar management to focus on weight loss. I rejoined Weight Watchers (I'm a lapsed lifer) and found a meeting that's more like family with a great leader, Kim. Despite the holidays, I managed to stick to the program. (READ MORE)

I think God has a sick sense of humor. You see, I have this terrible love of sweets. My favorite things are cheesecake, biscuits, cookies, cakes, muffins, and all things carb-filled.

When I was diagnosed with diabetes at age 4, they told me and my family that I couldn't eat any sugar. So my life turned into a sugar-free terror. The cookies and candies were always different than what my brothers ate. I was told when and what to eat in every excruciating detail.

Then we started counting carbs when I was about 11. No more nasty sugar-free foods. I could drink real soda for once. I could eat my own birthday cake. I could eat anything!

I've kind of given up when it comes to the holidays. Olivia's pretty good about not going nuts with the junk, but it's there and I'm not going to tell her she can't have something. I will ration, to a certain extent, but we talk about it and work out a compromise.

It's really hard sometimes, though, especially with the homemade baked goods. I SWAG bolus a lot and I must admit, I'm pretty good at it. Olivia does stay away from things like Hello Dollies and fudge, but she does like cookies and pies and such.

With guests in our office, we went to the local Mexican restaurant for lunch on a Thursday. My Novolog pen was tucked nicely in the long, front pocket of my purse, which was sitting on the chair next to me. I had tested prior to leaving for the restaurant, so I felt confident that I didn't need to bring my meter with me. We ordered and started munching on the chips and salsa placed on the table in front of us.
I discreetly pulled the pen from my purse in anticipation of my lunch showing up and held it in my lap under the table. One click for the corn chips, one (maybe two?) for the beans, two for the rice. Sigh, the chimichanga is made with a flour tortilla. And cheese. Lots of cheese. I wildly guessed what I should take for the whole shebang.
Back at the office, I struggled to remember what time I had started eating. We'd been gone for about 90 minutes, but I thought it had only been roughly an hour since I took the Novolog. (READ MORE)

I find that dinner seems to throw my sugars off worse than anything! I guess I just can't help myself whenever it gets to be chow time. I LOVE ME SOME FOOD! It never fails; I'll go through the whole day and not have one high sugar and then BAM! Hyperglycemia CITY!

My eyes get way too big for my stomach!

Usually I'll come home after a long day, start raiding the cabinets and throwing random stuff together, next thing you know, I got a plate a nachos, some peanut butter cookies, and a Popsicle!

I know, I know, I am supposed to eat healthy all the time...or something like that. I don't want people to think that because I'm a trainer that I eat perfect every day! I'm only human!

Is there specific etiquette for thanking someone whose quick thinking and kindness kept you from falling flat on your face during a low? Are there any written, or unwritten, rules for this? Should I send flowers or a note? Maybe baked goods are appropriate, since that's what really saved me. I guess I should ask my ever proper Great Aunt Lyn for suggestions. She's better with social graces than Peggy Post and Miss Manners combined.
As a type 2 diabetic, I never had to worry about lows until I started insulin last year. Then, when they hit, it wasn't anything too bad or too low, and I always enjoyed the excuse for eating candy. Besides, they always seemed to strike in a controlled setting, like my office or living room, just steps away from a handy juice box. (READ MORE)
