I'll admit it. I'm a big fan of cheap wine. Yummy. Give me some Boones Farm Strawberry Zinfandel on a hot summer night, and I'll get my buzz on - and get it on good. And I used to, back in the day, enjoy a nice cigarette (or ten) with my wine. Even now, every so often, I'll get a craving for a cigarette. Thankfully, the urge is usually cured by the smell of a heavy smoker passing by and occasionally cured by a simple, single drag on another person's gross-stick. (READ MORE)

When I tell my "real-life" friends stories about my friends from the Diabetes Online Community (DOC), I'm often told that my stories make these people sound real.
"Well," I say, "They are real. In many ways more real than some people I've met face to face."
I usually get the look then. The one that says: Nicole has been spending too much time online. Nicole's friends all live in the box.
That's the furthest thing from the truth. I mean - really - who can spend too much time online? And my friends don't live in the box, they just talk to me through it. Right?
I'm getting to the point. Patience. (READ MORE)

"How are you?" The Mr. wanted to know as I climbed to the top of a step ladder in our kitchen last night.
"I'm good, sweetie. Just trying to fend off a potential low," I said.
"Oh?" he questioned.
"It's hard work getting all this wallpaper off," I said, scraping off pink, flowery wallpaper. (Good riddance, finally!) There were several moments when I was actually slightly out of breath and felt my heart racing a bit.
I had tried a new recipe last night: mini pizzas made on English muffins-definitely not a diabetic-friendly meal, but I'm cutting costs and this was yummy and cheap. I snacked a little before dinner and thought I had bolused appropriately for the pizza. But without checking my numbers before getting to work on the kitchen, I don't really know where I was before my "workout." (READ MORE)

I sat at the stop sign at Love Street and Coal. Just a block away I got into my car after eating lunch. I had been good having just a sandwich, a glass of water and a handful of wheat thins crackers. I felt satisfied, not hungry and ready to go back to work. I was thanking Byetta for my lack of appetite. In fact, I remember thinking that I could have easily skipped lunch.
But between my house and Love Street the two sides of my brain prepared for battle. Going straight on Coal meant going back to work. It meant skipping the gas station or the drug store where I would break the $20 bill in my wallet for a cheap thrill. Going straight meant I had will power, that I didn't need chocolate, that I could make it through the afternoon at my desk without that rush. (READ MORE)

Working out with a stability, or Swiss ball, is an awesome way to get a good workout. If you're not familiar with what a stability ball is, then you can look it up on your computer or stop by a sport store. They are large rubber balls that allow you to work on numerous things. Their sizes range from 35 cm to 85 cm depending on the types of movements you want to do. Some of the benefits include balance, stability and core exercises, and they are also great to stretch on. Brynn just bought one for relatively cheap at our local Wal-Mart. If you decide to buy one, you have the option of purchasing the nicer name brand models, but from my experience, a rubber ball is a rubber ball. Anyway, this morning, I found myself working out on our stability ball and it felt wonderful!

On one of my recent posts about Olivia and her stomach issues, Cathyiowa asked if I got an answer from the doctor about Olivia's stomach pain. O's pain is in her rib area as well as in her stomach. I don't have a specific answer just yet, but we did talk to the endo about it yesterday, at length.

I told the endocrinologist that Olivia's pediatrician had ordered another celiac test in addition to a full blood workup. Once those results are in (March 3rd, if you're keeping score at home), I should have more information. The endo didn't seem overly worried, but she did want to know the results. She mentioned h. pylori as a possible culprit, but after telling us the symptoms (which are really quite disgusting), she didn't think that was the problem.

Olivia left for camp on Sunday. This was the first time in six years that I didn't bring her myself. I was at a blogger gathering in Niagara Falls, thoroughly enjoying myself, albeit a bit guiltily. I talked to her several times on the phone over the weekend and she seemed fine with me not going. "Well, I won't have to watch you cry this year," she said. Rotten child. (She's right. I do cry, every year. I'm a sap.)

Gilda Radner had a character on Saturday Night Live back in the day, when it really was funny and edgy.  Her name was Roseanne Rosannadanna, and she would tell Jane Curtin on the Weekend Update, “Well, Jane, it just goes to show you. It’s always something. If it’s not one thing, it’s another.”

I  spent the early part of the summer with a good handle on the diet half of the "diet & exercise" equation, but did little or no intentional exercise.  Then my job ended.  I found a really cheap deal at a decent nearby gym and joined up.

I’m going back to New York City this week for a meeting with my JDRF co-workers. I will be there, at the National Office on Wall Street, for Thursday and Friday. I always enjoy going to NYC. NYC is all that people say it is and more. It is, from what I’ve gathered and experienced, an unbelievable experience for any human being.

One of the reasons why I am so blown away by NYC is that it is COMPLETELY opposite of what my regular lifestyle and routine represent here at home.
