I had one, maybe two, good weeks on Atkins. Then funky things started happening with my blood sugar again. Despite not eating many carbs (and keeping those precious few carbs I ate to things like spinach, broccoli and baby romaine), my premeal readings started creeping up again.
Somedays, I'd wake up high--higher than when I went to bed the night before. One night, I went to sleep at 133 (which isn't too shabby for me these days) and woke up at 190. I didn't eat anything in my sleep either. That just isn't fair. If I'm going to be 190, I should at least get the joy of having done something to "deserve" it. (READ MORE)

How can you tell when you've tried too many different diets? When you can't keep the rules of them straight any more. This month, I'm following the Atkins diet. I'm doing it because my doctor took me off meds and I know from experience (and trial and error) that I cannot keep my blood sugar in healthy ranges without meds if I eat any carbohydrates. It isn't right, it isn't fair and there isn't anything I can do about it.
So Atkins it is this month. I started out the year on Weight Watchers. I've always considered Weight Watchers to be one of the healthiest, sanest, most practical diets. Unfortunately, it wasn't working for me this time around. The leaders keep saying the Core plan is great for people with diabetes, but I couldn't lose weight on it. Besides, I was eating mostly whole grains, fresh veggies and lean proteins. I think my portions sizes were too large. I did better counting points, but still that was a struggle to keep my blood sugar in line. (READ MORE)

After fighting lows on Glyburide last week, my doctor suggested trying just diet and exercise again. I thought he was crazy, it hasn't worked the last two times that I tried it, so why should it work this time. He gave it 80-percent odds of working. I jokingly asked if he wanted to put a friendly wager on it. I'm glad I didn't.
I am amazed to report that after one week without any anti-diabetes medication, my blood sugar had remained pretty normal for the most part. Granted, I'm only testing before meals, but still 90 percent of those readings have been under or close to 100. The one or two higher numbers I had were the result of a very bad night's sleep with a teething boy. Everything else, even bedtime numbers, was right in range. (READ MORE)

This is a bit of a rant. I get on this horse periodically, ride it around, waving my flags and guns, foaming at the mouth a bit, going slightly nutty. You'll get used to it. Or ignore it.

What is the deal with lumping both types of diabetes together? Seriously. If I have to read one more freakin' article about how high fructose corn syrup causes diabetes or get one more stupid email from some clueless acquaintance, telling me that if I just put my kid on the Atkins diet, she'll be cured, I'm going to go to the top of the water tower and start picking people off. OK, maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but holy cow, does it make my blood boil.

I was discussing diet with a friend of mine last weekend. We were talking about her mother, who is borderline type 2. I asked if her mother was watching her carbs and she said yes, that her mother had cut out almost all carbohydrates, but her blood sugars were still fluctuating all over the place.

When I asked what she was eating, my friend responded with "Chicken, fish, lots of fruit and yoghurt." I just kind of goggled at her. "Fruit? And yoghurt? Those have carbs in them, you know."

In response to my post about no longer taking insulin, a reader commented: "I don't understand why you are still eating carbs if not eating them keeps your blood sugar down." That's a very good question and one with a complicated answer.
When I was first diagnosed, I went to see a dietitian, who told me I could eat whatever I wanted, in moderation and in the right combination. She gave some examples that sounded great in theory but just didn't work in the real world. Imagine my dismay when my blood sugar clocked in at 250 two hours after eating two slices of white toast with peanut butter and half a banana with a glass of milk. (READ MORE)

I have to be honest in that I had no clue that there was a Diabetes Alert Day until hearing about it over the weekend. So for 20 years (18 in which I actually had diabetes) the American Diabetes Association has made this a day to alert people about the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Now it all makes sense. It is about type 2 and I am a type 1.
I do recognize that the diabetes epidemic is truly a type 2 issue but all of us are affected and now people that type 2 diabetes affects. This day should matter and be on the minds of everyone. I will say that for many years, just hearing "type 2" instantly made me check out of the conversation. (READ MORE)

Last week, I started a new "game" with myself. I call it Five For Five. I focus on five healthy habits for five days, earning points as I go and working toward a reward. Each week, the points accumulate for an even bigger reward.
I'm proud to report that I earned 23 of a possible 25 points last week. My daily habits were drinking three liters of water, exercising for at least 30 minutes, doing 25 sit-ups, testing my blood sugar three out of four times and not eating any junk. I expected finding 30 minutes to exercise each day would be my biggest challenge, but it turns out that wasn't the case.
The two points I missed last week were for sit-ups. The first one, I'd gotten as far as 15 when the little boy started having a melt down next to me. I thought I'd get back to the other 10 in a little while, but the day got away from me and I forgot. Then on the last day of the game, I didn't do them at all. (READ MORE)

It's been a while since I last updated and I apologize for that. Sometimes life just takes over.
A lot has happened in the last few weeks. When I last checked in, my blood sugar was crazy high, my vision was suffering the consequences and my endo was terribly unresponsive. Since then, I changed doctors, went back on the meds I took prior to getting pregnant, got my blood sugar back under control and can read the clock on the DVR again. I feel so much better.
I still haven't officially told my endo that I don't want to see him any more. I plan on writing him a Dear John letter soon. The final straw was that I contacted him regarding my vision problems and my shakey control and he told me to take metformin again. I asked to go back on the meds I took before seeing him and he ignored me. I felt that I had humored him long enough. (READ MORE)

If life is in fact a series of actions and consequences (and good Lord, I hope it isn't), then the fact that I eventually developed type 2 diabetes (known affectionately around the Rummel-Hudson compound as "the Beedies") is about as mysterious as why it gradually gets lighter outside at roughly the same time each morning. ("Did someone install stadium lights out there? Lets investigate. Oh, look, the sun...")
In college, I lived a life of excess. Despite the fact that I also drank way more than I should have, the main culprit was food. Glorious, wonderful food. I live in Texas, so take those food items and deep fry them. (To this day, the idea of chicken fried steak repulses my northern friends, and yet just now, when I typed those three lovely words, I got a little slobbery.) I drank too much soda, I ate too much crap, and if something green ever went past my lips, it was probably an M&M. (READ MORE)
