I know, I know, I know. People with diabetes must exercise. People with diabetes must stay fit. This is especially true for those of us with Type 2.
And you know it. I know it. You know you know it. I know you know it. Who needs to tell you this?
Reuters and Dr. Ronald Sigal of University of Calgary and colleagues at the University of Ottawa, as announced in this article, do feel the need to tell us. Specifically, they're telling us that lifting weights and resistance exercise also helps to reduce blood sugars, just like aerobic exercise does. Aerobic exercise, that would be the sweaty kind.
This is good news.
This means that ANY and ALL exercise you do counts for good diabetes points. It all counts! I love this. (READ MORE)

I am a gamer. I love playing video games either on my PC or on our Nintendo Wii.

2 weeks ago I was able to get my hands on the last Wii Fit being sold at our local retailer. In case you are not familiar with what Wii Fit you should check out this video clip.

Wii Fit is a fitness game from Nintendo that works using the Wii controllers and the Wii Fit Balance Board. The Balance Board is a highly sensitive peripheral that can measure a user’s weight and center of gravity. The software that comes with it can calculate your BMI when told the user’s height.

E: Exercise. For me, this "E" just has to be for exercise. I couldn't imagine it any other way. Exercise is so vital for me. A lifeline that often keeps me going even when I'd much rather give up.

For me, exercise is not a form of treatment. It actually often complicates my numbers much more than it helps them. I see a lot more peaks and valleys when I'm sticking with an exercise schedule than I do when I take some time off.

But exercise is a form of mental treatment for me. When I am working hard in the gym, running steady on the treadmill, or flexing my muscles in yoga, my mind processes things so differently. Sometimes it just shuts things off and tunes all the bad out. Sometimes it helps me see the light at the end of the tunnel. Sometimes it's just the recharge that I need.

My classes are all over the place this semester. Since I'm down to the final semesters, I don't have much left that I can take outside of my university or online. Plus I'm trying to leave the option to study abroad next semester, which means taking quite a few hardcore classes all at the same time.

I haven't done that since my first year here. After that, I managed to take at least one class online so I could better manage my fatigue. This semester, I wasn't so lucky. But you have to do what you have to do, right?

So far, I'm feeling okay. Just a little extra stress (headaches, sore muscles) from all the emotional things I'm going through right now. The fatigue hasn't set in...and I'm hoping that I can somehow ward it off this semester. But I am fighting against the balance of class and diabetes.

I've been having way too many lows for my comfort level lately. But I've yet to change my insulin. Why? Because I'm worried that lowering by just one unit will send me back into the 200s or that it'll be the Humalog and not the Lantus that needs adjusting. Or both.

Since I've started doing a yoga class twice a week and doing twenty minutes on my own at home, my blood sugars have been in the trenches. My averages have dropped, yes. But I'm having too many lows in the middle of the night, too many after I've just eaten, and too many below 70 that I don't catch early enough.

The other night, I had a snack before bed but didn't bolus for it. I just didn't feel like it and I wasn't sure I really needed more insulin in my system. I expected to wake up in the 200s and I was okay with that. But around 6am, I woke up with weak knees, a knotted stomach, and sweaty sheets. I had already dropped to 52.

I just returned from yoga, the exercise that I absolutely have loved from the first time I ever tried it back in my junior year of college. Each time I do a practice, I feel invigorated, relaxed, and splendid all at the same time. It's the kind of work out that leaves me both sore, cleansed, and strong.

I was pretty religious about my yoga practice when I first started. That lasted about a year and a half then I moved and lost access to my regular yoga classes. Doing yoga at home just isn't the same for me.

So about a month ago, I decided to try out a studio here in town that modeled the kind of principles that I like. It's a donation based studio that operates on the whole premise that we should be responsible and honest to give what we can and what we feel is appropriate. This amazes me since most yoga studios are so expensive (compared to a gym membership where you have access to classes).

My Lantus has been at 32 units (down from 34 units) since Saturday. And of course, my averages have jumped back to the 200s. Despite continuing to do the same things as the previous week (yoga, Metformin, and all other standards), 32 units is now kicking my butt in the opposite direction.

At 34 units, I was dropping low constantly and without warning. I would be 40 or 50 with no symptoms or wake up in the middle of the night way beyond my comfort level. So I tried 33 units and I got the same issue but in the 60s and 70s. So I figured that 32 units might be the ticket.

Apparently not. So I'll be raising the Lantus back up to 33 units tonight after another intense yoga session. Hopefully that will even things out without going to one extreme or the other. My aim is for averages in the 160s without excessive lows. And some consistency.

Many of you know that I started yoga back in college (around 2007). It was a way to get my Physical Education credits and also help my health. I was struggling at the time to manage a lot of joint pain, fatigue, and other symptoms that we couldn't pinpoint a cause.

After my first class, I was hooked. I realized that I'd been doing certain yoga poses all my life to stretch and relieve pain (shoulder stand and plow pose specifically). I took a second class and continued my practice at home. When I graduated and moved, I eventually found a studio to practice in which has completely transformed my mind on yoga.

But since taking my new job and dealing with a lot of stress last year, I fell out of my practice in the studio. I've worked out regularly at home, but I haven't done much yoga other than gentle stretching after my usual workouts. I haven't focused, meditated, or kept with my balance.
