Every November, those of us in the diabetes community bewail the "invisibility" of our condition, our passion, our advocacy over the remaining eleven months of the year. One of our ongoing gripes is that -- unlike breast cancer's pink ribbon, the red ribbon of AIDS awareness, Livestrong's iconic yellow wristband, or the double-cross of the American Lung Association -- there is no single, universally-recognized symbol or color representing diabetes.

Sometimes, real life hands me topics for posts and pleasure, and sometimes, there are "soapbox" issues on which I feel I must speak out. Often the "issues" arise from my being a "pattern thinker": I synthesize information by finding patterns. This means I often see patterns where others don't -- but that doesn't mean the patterns are real. Just like I need to analyze blood glucose logs to make sure that pattern of highs and lows I think I'm seeing is real, I need to research and observe to see if other patterns I think I'm seeing are real, or just my subjective impressions.

Today, the first Friday of February, is national "Wear Red" day in honor (or observance) of Women's Heart Health Awareness, as spearheaded by the "Go Red for Women" campaign. So of course I will be wearing red to work and I've been handing out Red Dress pins.

Thanks to En Vogue for those lyrics. We got back from vacation late Friday night but I'm still feeling my way back to my "new normal".
10 days in New Mexico in a travel trailer with kids (ages 4 & 1) - it went really well! Yes, that's shock you see in my punctuation! We went places and saw people and ran, ran, ran. The weather was beautiful, highs hovering around 80. They have gotten a lot of rain and some Dolly-effect flooding this summer, so it was quite lush by New Mexico standards.
Unfortunately, I didn't replace my workouts as I had hoped I would. Read that as "hoped, but didn't make definite plans for ahead of time." I need to remember that for the future. On the plus side, I was much more active than usual.

This morning, I had (literally) the toughest workout of my life. I joined a program called Strikingly Fit - a six week fitness and weight loss program - at a women's boxing gym. Today's workout was called "12 rounds." 12 four minute rounds of tough exercise. Running, jumping rope, lateral movement with squats, sit ups, push ups, planks, punching. It was awesome. And I feel incredibly strong having completed it.

I’m generally not a jealous person (at least I don’t think so), but “jealousy” is the only way I think I can describe what I’m going through right now.
Every time I see an ad for the breast cancer three-day walk — which is about every 30 seconds these days — I want to hurl the TV across the room. Why? Because why can’t that much attention be paid to people with diabetes?
Yes, I know there are walks for diabetes. But are there commercials with people dressed in blue saying “Save the ta-tas”… er, “Save the pancreases of the world” and “If I can walk 20 miles a day in support of my mother/sister/aunt/uncle/son/daughter then anyone can?” No, there aren’t.

I met Marvin over a year and a half ago in both our senior years of college. I wasn't looking for a serious relationship, more just a companion to spend Friday nights out on dates until I graduated in May. From our first moments sitting in Starbucks and learning all about each other, I think something told me it would be different with him.
I remember the next day texting a few times back and forth. He wanted to set up a date...soon. And I was playing it cool. I didn't want to fall head over heels, so why did I need to see this guy every night of the week? I knew exactly what I was looking for and a better half wasn't it.

Last night, I participated in a DiabetesSisters' PODS meetup for the first time. I've seen them online and always wanted to join, but there hasn't been anything in my area and I'm not in a position to add anything to my plate right now. I noticed it on the list last week and spoke with the woman leading the group.
So I made the trek (it's about an hour's drive for me) to the meetup and enjoyed an hour and a half of diabetes related conversation (with a little life mixed in) with three other diabetic women. Three of us were type one and the other type two. Two other women are supposed to join next time (one of them being a friend of mine who I met at JDRF).
It was nice to just sit and talk about lows and highs and doctors and all that goes on. For DiabetesSisters, there are some "guidelines" supplied for these meetings. The facilitator goes through a training to even host the meeting.

I believe a good workout comes with sweat. Which is why I don’t exercise during my lunch break and also why I prefer to exercise first thing in the morning.
I prefer to do my exercise walking outside. Using a treadmill is a last resort for me. I’m one of those weird people who’s more likely to exercise if it means I *don’t* have to go to the gym.
I’ve written a number of times lately about being committed to figuring out how to fit exercise into my schedule. The farthest I’ve gotten is the part where I say I’m going to think about it. But I’m getting fluffy and clothes that used to fit beautifully aren’t so much any more. Plus, I feel good when I exercise.

Each year, thousands of healthy babies are born to women with diabetes. This wasn't always the case. In the dark days before insulin, women with diabetes usually didn't live long enough to think about starting a family. Even in the 1980s, childbirth was risky for diabetic women and their children, with birth defects and stillbirths commonplace.
Thank God things are better today. Years of research shows that it's not only possible to have a healthy baby with diabetes, it's actually probable. Today we know that good prenatal care combined with tight blood sugar control lowers the risk for diabetic pregnancies. In fact, if you can maintain normal or close to normal blood sugar control, the odds of having a healthy baby and pregnancy match that of a non-diabetic woman. (READ MORE)
