The February "O - The Oprah Magazine" arrived last week and I just got to take a look at it. Our dLife reader and commenter, diabeteshope, called it perfectly last month right here. It seems that Oprah's weight gain she attributed to a thyroid problem may well have been hormone related. MOST people really cannot go off thyroid medication after they have started it.
Oprah says that after just ONE DAY of taking bioidentical hormones, she started feeling better. Boy, I didn't know any legal drugs worked that quickly! (Just kidding!)

The last few weeks have been gloomy. I am not referring to the weather either since here in Los Angeles we had over 100°F temperatures over the weekend. No I am talking about my outlook and mood.
While reading through all of the posts I have been writing I notice a common theme. A sense of sad and gloom that is not typically me. Anyone who has ever met me would not consider me a "down" or depressing guy. I am usually the life of the party type who you can hardly get to sit still. (READ MORE)

Since classes ended last week, I've been able to step back from life and take a deep breath. This semester was absolutely insane. I was taking six classes (18 hours) and none were all that easy. On top of that, I worked my normal amount. Plus, I've further established Diabetic Echoes and held weekly meetings on campus.
Needless to say, I haven't had much time for myself or for my diabetes. I'm months behind on my logging. I haven't uploaded my pump information since September. I'm eating whatever is fast and nearby, instead of making conscious choices on my nutrition. Plus, I haven't kept a steady workout routine.

I've battled my weight for decades now, like many people with type 2 diabetes. I might win a skirmish here or there, but there doesn't seem to be a victory or even a ceasefire in my near future. It's hard to understand why I can't conquer this when I've conquered smoking and other bad habits. It's even harder to forgive myself for failing repeatedly.
That's why I was relieved (delighted is more like it) to see Oprah all over the news this week "confessing" to her weight re-gain. If you watch her show or read her magazine or even scan the tabloid covers at the supermarket, you already knew she was gaining again. But she came forward to talk openly about it, perhaps partially to boost her New Year's week ratings. I also believe it was to help herself and others. As Dr. Phil says, you cannot change what you don't acknowledge.
