Somewhere between work and sewing the overgown for my most recent renaissance-faire visit, I managed to miss Friday's Blog Action Day. It's not something I feel I must participate in, but it's an occasional source of inspiration -- especially when it's a topic that can be turned on its ear.
This year the topic was water -- in particular, access to clean drinking water. Washing water. Safe, parasite-free water. Something that is lacking in many parts of the world. (At least one episode of Bobby G, Adventure Capitalist showed the eponymous individual playing a major role in bringing safe drinking water to a Nicaraguan community.)

Remember when I wrote recently about having bacteria in my urine? For the third time this year. Remember when I wrote about the first two times earlier this year -- when I had this problem twice within about two months? Remember that Dr. C didn't think it was such a big deal? Remember that I off-handedly blamed it on my water bottles, but didn't really have any "evidence"?
Well, now I do! In a recent Diabetes Health article, plastic packaging is linked to diabetes and other health problems: Higher urinary levels of the commonly used chemical, BPA, are linked with cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

So, the OmniPods I use are listed to have an IPX8 water tight rating which means the pods will work flawlessly in eight feet of water for up to thirty minutes. This is a great feature to have during shower times, sunny-day pool ventures, and splashing around carefree in the ocean. It is one of the reasons I chose to use it, because it limits the time I need to be disconnected from an insulin source. But, since I started surfing last year, three pods have met their fate in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. I was able to keep one from polluting the ocean floor, but the other two are on their way to a rusty end. Sad.

Getting ready for work this morning and listening to music as I often do, it was hard not to notice the striking juxtaposition of what was happening in the next room and the gorgeous melody filling the kitchen air. This morning it was "Cold Water," sung by Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan.
Cold, cold water surrounds me now
"You’re hurting me!"
And all I’ve got is your hand
"Ow! You’re hurting me!"
Lord, can you hear me now?
"I’m not trying to, Charlie. Please try not to move!"
Lord, can you hear me now?
"Wait!"
Lord, can you hear me now?

After some negotiating on Wednesday, I got a fairly decent deal at the gym with little down and a reasonable monthly payment. By Wednesday afternoon, I was sitting in the middle of the gym classroom on my yoga mat attempting to get myself back. I worked through the poses, sought mental clarity, and quickly realized that I am entirely too much out of shape.
I didn't feel any lighter coming out of the gym. I didn't feel anywhere close to myself either. But I was ecstatic that I now have access to yoga, pilates, and all sorts of gym equipment. Even if it does come at a price.
Over the past month, I've really been struggling emotionally. I just couldn't find a content or happy place. If I wasn't moody and sullen, I was empty. Only one day brought me joy in a way that I miss. The kind of day where you get home singing to the cat and in the mood to be productive. Only one day out of a month!

·On walking: For the first time in five days, I took my daily morning walk. Saturday and Sunday. And man did it feel good. However, I'm going to have to fire Sarge. Despite the new "anti-pull leash" my walking partner still just doesn't seem to respond to it nor my constant pulling on him. He was doing OK on Saturday, but on Sunday I got so angry that I made the final decision. The Mr. keeps telling me to try certain things, different tricks. And all I can say is "Tried it." "Tried it." "Tried it." I want to be able to take Sarge with me. In fact, I feel like I'll be naked without him on my walk. Not to mention scared without my 90-lb. bodyguard. (Maybe I'll take his leash for moral support!) But like I told The Mr., the more I have to stop to teach Sarge, the less my walk becomes about me. (READ MORE)

Charlie took a swig of his water, scraped his tongue with his teeth and contorted his face as if he’d just ingested lizard juice.
"Dad, does everyone get ketones?"
"No," I told him. "I think mostly just people with diabetes."
Charlie stared at his water bottle and said nothing more on the subject. His lips, that wanted nothing to do with the water, were dry and colorless.
"Charlie, you have to drink the water," I said. "We need to get rid of these ketones."
"But it tastes terrible," he said. "The water doesn’t taste normal. I think it’s the ketones."

I must admit -- with a bit of a blush -- that I'm very irresponsible when it comes to disposing of sharps and used pump supplies.
There was a time when I put every sharp in a medical waste container and The Mr. would dispose of it at the hospital for me. That was mostly pre-diabetes, though. That's when I was taking shots of blood thinners when I was pregnant.
For some reason, it became easier to drop the insulin needles in the bathroom trashcan than to find a sharps container. I frequently put "Get Sharps Container" on my to-do list, but it never got done. I never seemed as worried about the lancets, although I think they are still considered sharps.
In our new neighborhood, the city offers a free recycling program. And, get this, you don't have to sort anything! Just put all your recyclables in a big trashcan and the city picks it up once a week.

It's back. And this time I'm definitely blaming the blood/bacteria in my urine on my refillable water bottle. Remember several months ago when I had two horrible infections in the course of two months? Remember that I searched online in vain to blame the problem on my Nalgene bottle, but to no avail? Well, I ditched the Nalgene bottle and the problem went away. Except that when you live in the desert you have to drink water. Lots of water. So I bought another refillable water bottle and drank gallons of water a day. Well, not really, but you get the picture. And what happens? Three months later I'm in agony again.

Many hot-weather health issues center around proper hydration. My last post discussed how much water we should be drinking, and whether or not fluids other than water counted towards that volume. I finished up by mentioning that in addition to the amount we consume, we need to take into account how quickly we process those fluids, and what should (or should not) be in the fluids we are taking to maintain proper hydration.
