With all the blood that diabetes care involves, it's no wonder the "vampire" image keeps coming into play. A former T2 co-worker referred to going for blood work as "seeing the Vampire". Kerri's Diabetes Terms of Endearment list includes the entry, "Vampire cannula". For those who live in fear of (fictional) vampires, every time we prick our fingers to test... has to include the scary thought, "Am I inviting a vampire to bite me?"

If I didn’t have a child with diabetes, what would I be writing about?
I suppose I’d go back to writing essays on parenting and family life like I used to. Dead pets; the crises of lost toys; my 4-year-old’s pride in his penis; maybe my wife’s germ phobia and her lifelong dedication to the war against terror (aka ball pits).
I guess I’d be writing about my daughter Maeve, who is sad today.
I like True Blood - the HBO show about vampires and other supernatural, uh, things.

When Charlie's numbers are within range, you won't see Susanne and I high-fiving each other, slamming bellies or moon-walking. To use a baseball analogy, it's like a home run hitting catcher. He hits a homerun, rounds the bases, crosses home plate and then sits right back down and gets back to business - buckling and fastening his catcher's equipment with very little time to bask in the moment.
When Charlie's in range, there's an unspoken attitude that says "damn right, he's 104" but a reluctance to gloat so that the greater forces of diabetes are not offended.
If he's in range, well that's where he should be anyway. Let's move on.

I did an insulin pump infusion set site change this morning, by the ubiquitous lamp light on the dresser. My fiance (seven weeks until the wedding!) and I were talking about thresholds for pain and how I don't have much tolerance for emotional pain but my threshold for physical pain is high.
"I know. You can stick yourself with needles all day long but you freak out if you see a spider." He grinned at me.
"I know that needles aren't going to try and crawl on my head at night, that's for sure." (READ MORE)

I took Charlie to his endo appointment yesterday. It was the first time we didn't come with an unraveling scroll full of questions. I had no questions because I believe they have no answers.
It's not that Charlie is doing so poorly. His latest A1c of 8.2 was his best ever. But his numbers have been rough since school started and patterns have become difficult to spot.
A pair of medical students entered the room with big smiles and lots of questions. I couldn't help sounding very matter of fact and slightly defeatist.
"Yes, we're counting carbs correctly. Reading labels, subtracting fiber, all that fun stuff," I said.
"Yes, we have the Calorie King book."
A social worker came in next. She looked young - like she just came from cheerleading practice. (READ MORE)
