Kelly Nykaza’s daughter Leah was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes one year ago. On the topic of continuous glucose monitoring, Leah says, "other than changing it, it’s pretty good."

Pretty incredible coming from a 5 year old.

If you are like us and you are wondering if the time is right to consider continuous glucose monitoring for your child, this is an interview you’ll want to read.

We’re very fortunate for people in the online diabetes community like Kelly, who are willing to share their experiences with us so that perhaps our road may not be quite so bumpy.

“Aaaaaaaaaargh!” I screamed. I practically slammed my meter down on my bedside table. The Mr., who was half asleep next to me, was startled.

“What?”

“85!” I said angrily as I stomped down to the kitchen. It was 10:30 p.m. and I was in bed and in no mood to deal with a blood sugar that was too low to go to sleep and a downward trend on Dexcom.

I ate a granola bar, though I didn’t want to. And drank a few sips of milk. And took inventory of dinner: steak, potatoes, green beans, birthday cake, milk.

I went back upstairs and watched Dex like a hawk continue to go down. I reached for the SweeTarts. And then I got cranky. I could feel it all over, but I showed it by saying “I hate Valentine’s Day” after watching a commercial for jewelry or chocolates or something equally Valentine’s Day. “It’s just so commercial.”

Dipping Low

When life hands you low blood sugars, eat a bag of sugar on a stick made of sugar.

"Enjoy this moment," I told Charlie. "It's not going to happen too often."

I handed him a Fun Dip (his first ever) from his untouched Valentine's Day stash and watched his face light up like the sun.

"Mmmm," Charlie said. "I can see why people like these."

Valentine's Day isn't a big deal to me. It never really has been. I fall into the category of those who believe that it's overdone and mainly an economic endeavor for Hallmark. Oddly, I'm a total romantic/sentamentalist at heart.

I just don't see the point in this one holiday to show my appreciation and love for someone. Especially with candy, heart balloons, and kiddy cards. I'll take the flowers though. And a good date idea.

My definition of a good date varies by my mood. My all time favorite date is dinner and a movie. I absolutely love to go to the movies. There's something extraordinary about sitting in front of the cinema screen watching an enchanting story play out before my eyes. I leave all stress at the theater door. I feel like I'm part of the story.

If you hadn't noticed the red and pink hearts, the fluffy animals, and the ever-present flower commercials around lately, it's Valentine's Day! If you've been around awhile, you know that I don't buy into the whole chocolate hearts and big balloons on this day. I believe in sharing love every day of the year in small things rather than one day of big things.

Even with that belief, I am still human. Sometimes I don't manage to show my love, sometimes I manage to show what seems to be just the opposite. Thanks to humanity, health conditions, stress levels, fatigue, and all that jazz, Marvin doesn't always get the best of me even though I'd love to say he did.

Yes. I do believe I'm in a bit of a writers' rut. Not much to say. Maybe that's not such a bad thing since many of my blog posts are conceived out of the woefulness of it all. It is business as usual, I suppose. More good days than bad. This is good. Though this makes the bad days feel especially bad.

The dog days of winter (so to speak) are upon us and diabetes is just there, as always, buzzing around like a wasp in a closed car. Now hooked on Undercover Princes, the TLC channel continues to be a bright spot to fill the doldrums. Soon I suspect I'll grow addicted to an upcoming show about addiction.

Charlie's ice hockey has been without incident (knock on wood) in recent weeks. However, last Saturday, I spent a good 10 minutes at the front of the snack stand line shaking my head like a baseball catcher at every item of food Charlie requested; only to begrudgingly settle on the least of all evils set before me - a hotdog.

I have been MIA again for the past two weeks. The week before this one, I spent six days in Mexico with my mom enjoying some delicious food, soaking up the sun, and relaxing. It was much needed and much appreciated. This week has been incredibly chaotic between work, the Valentine's holiday, and general life craziness. I have a lot to update on though and several posts in the works.

First and foremost, my blood sugars are staying fairly well behaved. My 90 day average is at 186 (compared to 200+ just a month or so ago) and my 7 day average is in the 170s. I'm still battling lows that drop very quickly (and unexpectedly as you'll see in another post) to the 50s as well as a few highs in the upper 200s and 300s (still haven't figured out why I had 4 of those last week for no apparent reason). My Lantus is at 32 units as opposed to the former 33 units and I'm still taking 250mg of Metformin every day.
