My blood sugars seem to have a mind of their own (more than normal) these past few days. I'm bouncing all over the place, doubting my meter's accuracy, and questioning my own ability to manage this stupid disease. I can't seem to stabilize and insulin doesn't seem to be working the way it needs to. Worst of all, I think it's really wreaking havoc on my body as my fatigue has increased and I'm waking up with sore throats.

 

Last week I noticed a few bouncing numbers, but nothing out of the ordinary. I'd been running high trying to get my insulin stabilized and figure out my problem areas. I'd also been snacking too much before bedtime for fear of lows since I was going to sleep with numbers like 104 and 111. Those left my morning numbers high setting my days off on the wrong diabetes foot.

Easy enough.

 



So I cracked open the big, unabridged Webster's Dictionary and selected the word "Bermuda."

 


Bermuda ... like triangle? Okay, I'll try it.

I'm staring at the last three weeks of blood sugars. I've calculated my averages and circled every blood sugar that isn't between 60 and 250. But now, I'm just staring. I'm wondering what to do next.

 

Some of the highs are fairly unexplained (marked with the traditional question mark in my logbook) and some are the result of inadequate boluses, late/skipped boluses for snacks, or overtreating lows. And most of the lows are from decreasing my carb ratio at breakfast (saw a bout of 50's after breakfast three days in a row). Sadly, quite a few of the lows are unexplained just like the highs...late hit from exercise, stress, or just diabetes in its confusion...I'll never really know.

As everyone knows by now, my blood sugars have been elevated lately. Since about last Tuesday, my averages suddenly shot up into the 200s when usually I average 140s. All last week I was scared to make any changes just because I couldn't figure out why I was running so high. It's always my luck the day I increase basals that my blood sugars will drop back down and I'll end up with horrible lows. So I just kept blousing and tried to really watch what I ate to keep my levels down. Nothing worked. (READ MORE)

Friday morning, I packed up my bags to head to the lake for the weekend. I had a long drive ahead of me, so I made sure to bring extra juice, keep my meter handy, and lots of water. I stopped for lunch on the way.

 

I checked my blood sugar. 264 (up from 102 at breakfast). Unexpected, considering all I had for breakfast was water and eggs. Nothing that should send my blood sugar spiraling. So I bolused for the blood sugar, bolused for lunch, and enjoyed my quick meal before hitting the Texas highway.

"Mom, I've been peeing a lot today. Prolly five times since we got home," No. 1 says to me as I'm lying on the bed counting the seconds until the kids go to bed. Yes, it's been a stressful, well, five days, and I can't wait to go back to work. But I digress.
No. 1 has been "complaining" quite a bit lately about his need to frequently see a man about a horse. He doesn't know that those comments make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. My head goes right to worst-case scenario, although reality does tell me that he has no obvious symptoms on the diabetes checklist.
Sure, he's going potty more often than he thinks he should, but he's not drinking obsessively, he's not overly tired (usually beats me out of bed in the morning, in fact), doesn't have an insatiable hunger, nada. (READ MORE)

My blood sugars have been rocky in the last few days. I haven't made any insulin or exercise changes, but I've been staying fairly "low." And this evening, I hit rock bottom.

 

Most of my blood sugars have been in the 120's, which I'll take any day of the week. There have been a few 160's and an episode of 200's during my workout on Tuesday, but mostly I'm doing okay. Yet the bad lows are back.

 

Last night, I had a 56 a few hours before bed. And after juice and crackers, I was only 92. So I ate about 25 grams of LifeSavers and hoped for the best. Only to wake up to a 58. I ate breakfast, did insulin for the extra carbs, and headed to class.

I'm a type 1 insulin dependent diabetic. I have been since I was 4 years old. I also have polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS for short)...along with endometriosis if you really want to get detailed. The PCOS didn't pop up until 2006 when things progressively got worse.

 

Sudden weight gain, mood swings, fatigue, pelvic pain, very irregular periods, acne, male patterned hair growth, hair thinning, ovarian cysts, and increasingly difficult blood sugar swings.

My blood sugars are in a world all their own lately. Last weeks averages are in the 200's...something I haven't experienced in probably three to four years. Even between sick days, periods, and holidays, my averages never top 190.

 

But last week was a total landslide in the diabetes realm. My body is telling me something, although I'm not positive what it is. And unfortunately, those blood sugars are now telling my body something else as they've wreaked havoc on my immune system, my energy level, and my concentration.

 

I really did try to work on my list of diabetes "to-do's" over the past week. I stopped forgetting my Lantus injections and I only let a bolus slide once or twice. I didn't check as much as I should have, nor did I get any more workouts into my routine. But I was hoping the slight increase in positive diabetes behavior would have a decreasing effect on those blood sugars.

Tonight we're meeting friends for dinner and a show at the Tin Angel in Philadelphia. Fantastic place to see live music if you ever have the opportunity. We're seeing a band called the Trashcan Sinatras, which you may have heard of if a.) You listened to alternative/college radio in the early 90s or b.) You're from Scotland. A great band.

 

I do hope we make it there. We can certainly use it. These rare night outs have a tendency to fall apart at the eleventh hour for one reason or another unfortunately. Charlie's recent trend of unexplained high blood sugars has us wondering if a virus is lurking within him, only to be revealed as we're walking out the door with keys in hand.

 

Susanne has changed his infusion site two times in the last two days to see if that was the source of the highs. Alas, no. The highs are coming no matter what.

 

We're both pretty frustrated.
