A friend of mine died last night, following a battle with lymphoma. The disease came back last summer after he had been in remission about a year. It was discovered about a week after my daughter was born. The prognosis was not good with a recurrence within a year at mid-life. He was only 45 and left two teenage children.
We had fallen out of touch in recent years, but I knew through his sister that he had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. (READ MORE)

Some years ago, I joined an online "healthy eating forum", expecting support in eating healthy (fresh, whole, medically-appropriate) foods in reasonable amounts -- the same sort of community support one expects from a community in which people are looking to lose or maintain weight. What I found instead was a community of young women in various stages of recovery from eating disorders or disordered eating, or progressing from one type of disordered eating to another.

I remember the day Charlie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. It was November, 2003. Carey was giving a then 3-year-old Maeve a bath upstairs. I was holding Charlie in my arms as he slept. He was 20 months old.

This is a bit of a rant. I get on this horse periodically, ride it around, waving my flags and guns, foaming at the mouth a bit, going slightly nutty. You'll get used to it. Or ignore it.
What is the deal with lumping both types of diabetes together? Seriously. If I have to read one more freakin' article about how high fructose corn syrup causes diabetes or get one more stupid email from some clueless acquaintance, telling me that if I just put my kid on the Atkins diet, she'll be cured, I'm going to go to the top of the water tower and start picking people off. OK, maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but holy cow, does it make my blood boil.

Diabetes has always entailed a lot of paraphernalia. Back in the day, meters were three times the size they are now. Bottles of strips weighed a ton. And syringes came with much longer needles. Plus there were juice boxes, snack packs, and rolls of candy. But even now, with all the advances in this modern day and age, diabetes comes with baggage (and I'm not talking the emotional kind).

One of the more heated discussions going through the diabetes online community is whether or not type 1 diabetes should be renamed to avoid it being lumped in with the public perception of type 2 diabetes. "Don't blame me because my pancreas decided to crap out on me!" is the rallying call -- implying, rightly or wrongly, that type 2 diabetes is always caused by the person with diabetes, through a combination of poor diet choices and poor lifestyle choices. Many people with type 2 diabetes -- particularly the young, fit, and not-obese -- also take issue with that perception.

Today (March 24th) is American Diabetes Alert Day. This is the 21st year for this event, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), though I don't recall prior years. They did get a mention in Dear Abby, which I'm sure is the ultimate PR notice for this type of event.

After quite an eventful yet relaxing weekend, we're back to our regularly scheduled DIABETES' series. We've gone through DIABE, but we haven't yet finished the word. "T" gave me a little bit of trouble. I wasn't sure exactly where I wanted to go with it. I was focused on treatment, but felt it was a bit overdone. My final pick hit me when I heard that it was LADA Awareness Week.
T: Types of diabetes seem to get more complicated every year. I remember back in 1993 when I was diagnosed that there were really only two types. Type 1 for kids and type 2 for the adults. But over time, culture and the environment has changed. Now it seems that we know of so many different kinds of diabetes that I'm not sure we can ever be sure of what type we actually have.

Congratulations to Halle Berry on the birth of her healthy baby girl on Sunday! The height and weight were not divulged, so let's all hope the baby doesn't suffer from macrosomia, a common complication for women with diabetes. Regardless of Halle's ignorance about her diabetes, the healthy arrival of a baby is ALWAYS news to celebrate!
A conference this week in Washington is focusing on the subtypes of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. At least 16 different genes can impact type 2 cases, and 14 genes can be involved in type 1. One of the goals of the conference is to increase awareness of the many possible forms of the disease beyond type 1 and type 2. (READ MORE)

"So, Charlie, did you hear? Scientists are working on a possible cure for diabetes that could come from testicles?"
"Huh? The what?"
"You don’t know what your testicles are?"
"Uh uh."
"You know. It’s your, uh …
