With a few weeks to go still until the baby gets here, I feel like I'm really starting to get some parts of motherhood down. Particularly the worry part.
I worry when my blood sugar is high, I worry if it's low. I worry if he's not moving around much and if he's moving around too much, I worry that he'll be a hyperactive little boy and I won't be able to handle it.
In addition to the concerns surrounding the effect my diabetes could have on the baby, I encounter the regular mommy worries, too. I want him to be healthy and happy. And to grow up to make a difference in this crazy world.
But like many of my diabetic mommy friends, one thing I worry about most is passing diabetes on to my child. Sure, there are a lot worse things that could happen to him out in the world, but living with diabetes day in and day out is something I'd rather not have for my son. (READ MORE)

By now I am sure most of you have heard about the “breakthrough” discovery made regarding a possible cure for type 1.
When I saw the report on NBC nightly news I was floored. I sat in my chair staring in front of the TV. My son said, “that is cool huh dad?”
I just looked at him and said, “I guess it is.”
His weird look was probably a mirror of the weird look I felt I had on my face. How was I supposed to feel about this?

When I was in the third trimester of pregnancy last spring, I began asking about breastfeeding and my various medications. Thyroid was a no brainer, since it's just replacing what my body doesn't make itself. If I had needed insulin after delivery, that was no problem for the same reason. The big issue was taking metformin.
My Ob/Gyn said "Ask your Endocrinologist." My pharmacist said "OH NO, NOT metformin!" My endo said "No, you can't take metformin while breastfeeding." His Physician's Assistant later said "Sure, you can take metformin and nurse, but Dr. Endo isn't comfortable with our office telling you that officially; so do your own research and make up your own mind." Type 1 isn't known as an adult disease. Until a few years ago, I didn't know anyone who called my diabetes Type 1 Diabetes. It was Juvenile Diabetes, Childhood Onset Diabetes... You get the gist. And when I was a child, I never thought about diabetes as something adults had in spite of the fact that I knew several Type 1 diabetic adults during my youth.
Anyhow, today, I was thinking, there should be some rules for being an adult with Type 1. Perhaps you'll think of some to add to the list I've come up with.
H is for How to be an adult with Type 1.
1. Test even though you're busy. Log even though you're busy. Bolus even though you're busy. Are you sensing a theme? As an adult, rule #1 is pay attention - even though you've got a lot of other things going on. It's a challenge, but diabetes needs to be a priority. (READ MORE)

I'll tell you another secret. I kinda LIKE the Jonas Brothers. Laugh all you want since I am quite a couple decades away from their usual tween-aged fan base. Disney signed them though, and from Annette Funnicello until Miley Cyrus and beyond, Disney has a proven eye for musical talent. (Maybe not class, but definitely talent).
Nick is, at 15, the youngest brother of the singing group (they do have another even younger brother named Frankie - think Andy Gibb snubbed from the BeeGees for his youth). As everyone with any connection to diabetes knows, Nick has had type 1 for almost 3 years.

On Friday I had an appointment with my endocrinologist. I was looking forward to talking to him about some new ideas I had thought about especially Symilin.
When I told him he was very receptive to the idea of trying Symilin and thinks it may help with some weight loss.
"Most type 2's don't have a problem using Symilin. I have subscribed it often," the doctor said to me.
"Oh but I am a type 1," I tell him in the nicest voice I can muster since I know why he said what he did.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes I am just fat." I had this same discussion with his nurse the last time I was here and I thought then that at least it wasn't my actual doctor saying something so stupid.

I must admit that when I went to bed Monday night I was a little nervous, a little anxious, a little excited about my endo appointment Tuesday morning. In fact, when my fasting was well above 200 on Tuesday I wondered if my nerves had anything to do with it.
Tuesday's appointment was a follow up for labwork and an ultrasound on my thyroid that I had about 10 days ago. I was pretty sure the lab work (much of which was antibody tests to determine if I am truly type 1 or type 2) would show that I am type 1, but there was still a little part of me that doubted I was right.

Nobody likes a know-it-all. I've worked really hard for a number of years to keep myself from saying, "Actually, this is how it is...." in just about every situation. I've worked hard to decide when I should make an issue out of what I think is right.
I think I'm doing pretty good with not forcing people to know that I know everything. Even when it comes to diabetes. I've written here before about avoiding conversations about diabetes and not getting into too much detail about certain diabetes-related issues. It depends on the person and the conversation and so many other factors.
But tonight while I was proofing a story for work, I went back and forth about whether to make the distinction between type 1 and type 2 diabetes for an audience that the majority of whom likely have no idea that there even is a difference.

There was a time when I went around promoting my son's diabetes like a ring announcer for a boxing match.
And now, wearing a green Old Navy tee-shirt with white trim and a blue Minimed 522 insulin pump; weighing in at 44 pounds and holding the record for 17 low blood sugars in a single day; pumping out of Philadelphia, PA , The Type 1 Machine Gun ,

Having been away for a weekend of fun since Friday morning, I feel like I've been living under a rock! Albeit a really fun rock, with a little alcohol, BBQ, and great music, but still a rock.
So, as I watched Barack Obama introduce his first Supreme Court appointment, Sonia Sotomayor, this morning, I was taken aback to discover that she has type 1 diabetes. That she was diagnosed at eight years old. That she's lived with type 1 for 46 years.
How incredibly inspiring for people with diabetes. Even more inspiring, I would imagine, for those raising children with type 1.
