I'll admit: I'm not the most regular contributor to the Diabetes Social Media (#dsma) Wednesday-night Twitter chats, and I don't always get the time to tune into the Thursday-night BlogTalkRadio program (or listen to the archive), but when Cherise announced the first DSMA Blog Carnival, I figured I really should chime in. The problem is the topic: "The Most Awesome Thing I've Done Despite Diabetes". I haven't done awesome things despite diabetes, but rather because of it.

People with diabetes, and those touched by diabetes, follow their journey with the disease through a myriad of winding emotional paths. Depression is very common for those newly diagnosed, sadness can rear its head at different stages in the game, and a little humor and humility can even find the door to expose itself from time to time. The keys for controlling those doors are littered all over the place and on  Wrld Diabetes Day today, you can follow this map of internet hotspots. Expose diabetes for all that it is, good and bad, and then share it with others. Find an emotion and embrace it!

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes twenty-five years ago. Twenty-five years is a long time to live with something. It is an especially long time to live with something that requires tight control. Twenty-five years is enough time to have seen lots of bad days, lots of good days, and lots and lots of in betweens. And it is enough time for me to have had the good fortune of seeing vast improvements in access to information and treatment, developments and improvements in technology and even some improvements in (GASP!) what health insurers are willing to cover. My relationship has changed, and I'm not happy. Over the past three weeks, I've lost so much trust in what I'm being told that I'm looking at "playing the field" again.

 

The relationship I'm talking about is the one with my glucometer.

I joined Tu Diabetes recently.
If you feel like your page is being spied on by a guy sitting on a bench across the street in a grey overcoat and a newspaper with two holes cut out for eyes , well, it has. It's me.
I've been snooping around in the parents of kids with type 1 group, ogling your A1cs.
I've spotted some very nice ones.
Seeing such a selection gets me in that envious, wanting mode - the way I get when let loose in a good record store.
"Whoa! 6.8! That's rare. I don't have this one."
"Wow, 7.2! I don't have this either. I thought they broke up?"
"Ooh, a 7.0 live in UK bootleg. I have to get this!"
"This 7.4 is also pretty cool. I only have their 8.7 and their 8.9."
But these desirable A1cs must be returned to the shelves. (READ MORE)

A bell's not a bell 'til you ring it... -- Oscar Hammerstein II

 

Much like the opening lines of the "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" reprise ⁽¹⁾, knowledge -- like love: doesn't exist "'til you give it away." Data become knowledge when they are shared, analyzed, verified. Or like money in Hello, Dolly!, knowledge "is like manure -- it doesn't do good unless you spread it around, encouraging young things to grow."

 

While sharing everything you know may, perversely, show up everything you don't know, knowing what you don't know gives you the option to learn it. Of course, there will be someone who will take that opportunity to say that it's your posterior, not your cranium, that has the intelligence,⁽²⁾ but y'know what? That's just him (or her) sharing his (or her) lack of knowledge.

Every year, the "blue versus red" argument comes up as diabetes bloggers and patient advocates discuss the relative merits of the American Diabetes Association, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Diabetes Research Institute, the International Diabetes Foundation, and World Diabetes Day. This week, however, the color of diabetes is pink.

Or; People Aren't As Bad As I Sometimes Think They Are.

My Dear Santa letter the other day was my usual somewhat sarcastic offering, something I tossed off as I was perusing the Salter scale website and lusting after that sweet, sex-ay model they have. I threw in the other two items to make up a list.

Someone on the TuDiabetes site saw it, though, and asked if she could buy the pump skins for Olivia. I was slightly embarrassed, hoping that no one mistook my usual snark-fest as actual requests for gifts. When she assured me that was not the case, that she just wanted to do something nice because "it's hard enough being a teenager with diabetes," I said yes.

The skins arrived today and Olivia wasted no time in having me apply one of them. The tie dyed one. It was, in her words "Sweet!" Which made me laugh.

It was a very nice early Christmas present. And she will be sending off a thank you email tonight.

While browsing around Facebook the other night, I came across a status update from a girl with whom I went to high school.  She was talking about her struggles with low blood sugars, and being annoyed with diabetes. 

 

I was kind of shocked when I read that, because I didn't recall knowing she was a diabetic. I didn't know if I really didn't know that she's had type 1 diabetes since she was 8 years old, or if I had simply forgotten about it after all of these years.  I have dealt with some memory loss issues in the last year, so it wouldn't surprise me if I just didn't remember.

 

Since my curiosity was up, I reached out to her via Facebook, and asked about her diagnosis. And in the initial message I included an invitation to check out the Diabetes Online Community (D-OC).
