You'll often hear parents of children with diabetes - myself included - moaning and groaning about the many classroom birthday parties that we must contend with. Seems it's every week that my wife gets a call from the nurse regarding an unexpected carpet-bombing of brownies or cake.

 

We deal with these situations without too much of a fuss, but still, it's yet another curve ball thrown our way.

 

I've read many horror stories through the years of classmates' parents who just don't get it. Or rather, parents who think they get it but really don't at all. Hard to believe, but I remember a story about one parent who distributed birthday treats to all of the kids in the class except the kid with diabetes. He thought he was doing a commendable thing in recognizing that there was a diabetic in the class and keeping the evils of sugar away from him or her.

Just a few days to go until Halloween; the first of the food holidays. The stores have been stocked with trick or treat candy since Labor Day. I have fallen for that trap before - buy treats for the kiddos in early October, then again the next week and again the next because the candy keeps getting eaten up. The past 2 years I got wiser and don't buy the Halloween candy until less than 5 days to go. (That's not as smart as it sounds since we have not had a single trick or treater since we moved into this house in the woods 4 years ago!) (READ MORE)

A poster named Peg asked a question on one of my recent posts. She wanted to know if I had any suggestions on how to get her grandson to stop sneaking food that he wasn't supposed to have.

I don't know what kind of regimen your grandson is on, so I'm not sure exactly how much help I can be, but I'll give you suggestions for what we've done with Olivia. Maybe one of these will work with your grandson.

I've kind of given up when it comes to the holidays. Olivia's pretty good about not going nuts with the junk, but it's there and I'm not going to tell her she can't have something. I will ration, to a certain extent, but we talk about it and work out a compromise.

It's really hard sometimes, though, especially with the homemade baked goods. I SWAG bolus a lot and I must admit, I'm pretty good at it. Olivia does stay away from things like Hello Dollies and fudge, but she does like cookies and pies and such.

OK, I really don't hate Halloween. In fact, I really like the "holiday". I love to see well-done costumes and to watch my children have so much fun gathering all that candy and showing off their costumes. It's fun to watch them have fun. Even my office-mates enjoy the black-and-orange season. This morning we all walked downstairs to see the parade of three-year-old preschoolers come through in their costumes while trick-or-treating at the downtown businesses. We oohed and aahhed at the pirate, the princess, the flower and the pilot. (READ MORE)

A week ago I was all prepared to write a post about how I was ready to lose weight. I was tired of my muffin top and of my clothes being too tight. And I fear this summer's trip to the beach in a bathing suit.
That was a week ago. A week ago, when I was ready to dig my workout clothes out from their hiding places. A week ago, when I was ready to shun fast food and treats. It's amazing what a week can do. (READ MORE)

When Oliver fell down the school stairwell, I’ll admit I was skeptical. It was the same footage from the original Hannah Montana episode, and I don’t think I liked it the first time either. I didn’t like that the first depiction of diabetes was that of a kid falling down the stairs.

 

But Susanne, being the voice of reason, was quick to mention that it could happen; if he was very low.

 

Charlie had another take on it.

 

"He’s high," I think, Charlie said.

 

"I’m silly when I’m low, but if I’m really high, my eyes feel funny and I get a little dizzy."

 

Hats off to Disney.

 

Sugar Boy? Gone.

 

Oliver’s zombie-like lust for sweets that he couldn’t touch? Completely rewritten.

Food is frustrating to me. Ever since I can remember, food has been a completely different aspect in my life than what my family, peers, and humanity deals with. Yes, food is a source of energy and existence. Yes, it's amazing. Yes, it packs on the pounds. But it's also a total love-hate relationship with me. For one reason: diabetes.

 

When I was first diagnosed, my life was thrown into "sugar-free" mode. My sugar intake was limited. I never tasted a real coke unless I was low. I didn't get to eat normal candy or normal desserts. Everything was tainted by fake sugar, a chemical taste that couldn't replace my childhood need for some old-fashioned sugar.

My family always ate pretty healthy. With two older brothers, there was always a lot of food around. Stew, king ranch chicken, hamburgers. But always balanced meals. We knew that veggies were good for us, fruit was always accessible, and desserts were minimal.

 

It was never an issue to eat a salad or mixed vegetables. I don't recall ever feeling jeopardized for not snacking or having instant access to ice cream, cookies, and cake. They were treats that we always enjoyed, but in moderation.

 

I never really thought about food (or don't remember it) as helping or hurting my diabetes though. It wasn't ever really about how celery is a free food, but cookies weren't. I just ate what was placed in front of me or what I found in the fridge.
