I've been bragging for a few months now that Mom and Dad are flying my family, my brother's family and my single brother to Catalina Island, Calif., in June to celebrate Mom's 60th birthday (which is in August). Having spent quite a bit of time at the beach as a youngster, I simply can't wait to introduce my children to the ocean.
Although the trip isn't until the first week of June, I've already done some preparing. I'm making mental lists of supplies I'll need for the kids, noting which suitcases to take, realizing I need to drop a few pounds, and even (gasp!) deciding to buy a new swim suit since it's been years since I had a new one. (I think I may need to be heavily sedated or severely drunk for that dressing room session!) (READ MORE)

I've been a very good girl this year and my wants are few. But, Santa, you know my fondness for things that go beep, bing and buzz, the little frisson of excitement I get at the thought of an LCD or a digital readout. With that in mind, here are a few diabetes-related gadgets I would love to have under the tree this year:

A Salter Travel Scale. It's a snip at $30 and sure would come in handy when we're out and about. And it would slip into my pocketbook quite easily. And it's really freakin' cool.

My job interview went well. I think very well. I am getting more and more excited about having the opportunity to work with this organization. I am still holding out on the name of the company for certain reasons. In due time though, I will be able to share with everyone. In the mean time, it's time for a little VACATION!!! My girlfriend and I are heading down to Florida for a few days and WE CAN'T WAIT! We will be soaking up some major sun rays, relaxing on the beach, and maybe even flying through the air on some bad-AS* roller coasters!

Traveling can be an awesome thing. I find that when I do travel, I pay the utmost attention to controlling my diabetes. I'm away from home, I don't want anything to happen. For me, the simple fact that I'm in an unfamiliar place without any "diabetic connections", is reason enough to watch my control closely. When traveling I start thinking about what I would do or where I might end up if I got really low. Personally, I guess that is one of the main reasons while I try and take special care of myself and my sugars while away on vacation or business.

This is the realization I came to this week as I was traveling on JDRF business.

I have been having some troubles finding the urge to blog lately. I really haven't felt like I've had anything that I consider worthwhile to share or to write about. At different times in my life I lose motivation to do things. During these times when I get down, I don't want to work, I don't want to take care of my diabetes, and I definitely don't feel like writing about it. But then again, as I write this and begin to feel the relief of getting things of my chest, I guess I do.

I'm leaving for Mexico today on a little (much needed) vacation. This is only my second trip since being on the pump. My first trip went over quite smoothly. I have no idea what my blood sugars ran, but I don't recall anything too horrific. And I didn't have any problems traveling with my pump or supplies.

 

But each trip is a little different and always a little nerve-racking. What if I didn't bring enough supplies? What if my snacks cause a red flag through airport security? Worse, what if they think I'm some terrorist because of my pump? What if I have an emergency while I'm there, surely those hospitals aren't like home?

I’m going back to New York City this week for a meeting with my JDRF co-workers. I will be there, at the National Office on Wall Street, for Thursday and Friday. I always enjoy going to NYC. NYC is all that people say it is and more. It is, from what I’ve gathered and experienced, an unbelievable experience for any human being.

One of the reasons why I am so blown away by NYC is that it is COMPLETELY opposite of what my regular lifestyle and routine represent here at home.

We live in Southern California not too far from "the happiest place on earth." With that, season passes to "The big D" (as we refer to it) are a very good investment for us. We can go during the week after work for a few hours. Ofter we head over after church on Sunday for a few rides and then head home. The kids don't flip out because they know that we can go back when we want to. It works quite well for us and it's a blast!
Except when diabetes shows up in the form of a very scary low.
We made dinner reservations in New Orleans Square and we had to rush from Space Mountain which is on the other side of the park. My sister and her fiance took the lead and my wife and kids brought up the rear. Snaking through a ton of people is the easiest way to move quickly. Single file and move fast. I was at the very back of the line and of course started to feel low. (READ MORE)

Happy World Diabetes Day everyone. I would have gotten you all a card, but my local Hallmark had none left.
It's fitting for us that diabetes awareness and World Diabetes Day falls in November - the month of Charlie's diagnosis.
We worry about Charlie every day. We worry about his present and we worry about his future. We worry when he's out of our sight and we worry when he's sitting on our laps. We worry that he'll be the last one picked. We worry about him feeling alone. Being alone. Asleep, awake, happy, sad, silly, angry - we worry. (READ MORE)

Today's lunch was a goodbye lunch for a colleague who is retiring. Again. We went to a Mexican place that had rockin' chimichangas. (I so love chimmies, but man does my blood sugar pay for it…it's been four hours and I'm still in the upper 200s despite taking oodles of insulin.)
 

As we munched on chips and salsa while waiting for our entrees, we asked B if he had any plans yet. Was he going to travel right away? Just sit around and do nothing? What?
 

"Well, we'll probably do some babysitting first," B said with a chuckle. B and his wife H don't have children and from what I can understand adore watching their grand nieces and nephews.
 

"Will you go to California or will they come here?" R asked.
 

"New Jersey," B said.
 

It was loud and B can be softspoken, so it was difficult to keep up even though he was sitting right next to me.
