I'm one of those annoying people who actually enjoys exercise. I love the feeling of my body running or walking in smooth motions, the way my muscles push through even the toughest movements, the feeling of being on top of the world when you're running down a trail. I don't shy away from most activities because I can't do them or don't enjoy them, instead I thrive on new exercises and overcoming my previous goals.
Just a short year and a half ago, I was on the biggest exercise kick ever. I'd done sports of all kinds in junior high and high school. I'd enjoyed them and even to this day still miss them. But in 2009, I was working out to lose weight. I was committed. Working out in the gym with classes or weights around 2 hours almost 7 days a week. Running on top of that.

I haven't been walking lately. In fact, I can't remember the last time I went for a morning walk. I *do* remember putting my exercise clothes out one night certain that I'd be walking the next morning and then not actually walking.
I'm not sure what the problem is. Over the summer, naturally it was the heat. I've come to realize that it's not how hot it gets here, it's how long it's hot. And I think when you're so hot for so long you just don't want to do anything that makes you hotter.
As the summer wore on and the days got shorter, it was harder to get out of bed in the mornings. The Mr. and I would both hit snooze so many times that we'd almost be late for work! It was "easy" to do that since it stayed dark longer.

Sticking to a regular exercise routine and schedule has always been a real challenge for me. Yeah, I know it's something that I need to be doing, but that's not always enough to keep the motivation flowing.
I joined a gym around this time last year, and I went at least 3 times a week for a while. I developed a pretty good routine with the help of the trainers, and was doing great with it. Then I had to take a break from going because of an ankle injury. That had me down for a month or so.
I started going to the gym again for a while after the ankle stopped hurting, and got back into the routine I had been doing, and all was going well again. Then vacation time rolled around, and you know what that means? More time out of the gym. Oh sure, there was a lot of walking involved during the vacation, and that is certainly a form of exercise, but it just wasn't the same as being in the gym.

I’ve had a really hard time with my writing/not writing lately. In December I blogged only once, and so far this month I’ve blogged twice.
This is kind of weird for me because I’m so used to writing so often. It hurts, actually, that I haven’t been doing more of it. It’s not for lack of trying, though. I’ve written countless Post-It notes to myself with blog topics and have every intention of writing when I get home and then I don’t.
And it’s not like I’m forgetting to do it, I just don’t do it. Or I decide that I’d rather do something else. I think about the Post-It note stuck to my calendar and about all the things I would say in the blog and how wonderfully eloquent I would be. And then I just don’t do it.

This Saturday will mark my fourth week of boxing training. I'm pretty pleased with my progress. I've been running 4-5 days a week for 40 minutes. I'm getting faster, and stronger with my runs, pushing myself harder and harder. I also take 3 60-90 minute classes a week, primarily kickboxing classes. My power is growing by the day, even though I'm shrinking. I've lost 8 pounds since January 1st. But moreover, my muscular definition is changing for the better. I feel excellent.
I've pumped up my eating a bit, going from 1,400 to 1,600 calories a day and consuming more protein.

This is a breakdown of my first use of the Dexcom CGM. It's had its ups and downs, as you'll see. It's been peace of mind and obsession all in one. Mostly, it's been eye opening to what my diabetes is really like these days.
Day 1: I was really excited to start the first sensor. I went through all the setup process. I waited for the receiver to charge, downloaded the software, and prepped my skin for the sensor. The sensor comes with its very own insertion device. The insertion is nothing like the Minimed CGM that I used before. You see the needle in the device, just like you see the needle with the Minimed. However, this isn't a fast, hard insertion. It's up to your own fingers to stick the needle in. Surprisingly, past the initial sting of the needle, it really doesn't hurt at all. Much less than the Minimed for sure.

Just as hyperglycemia is but the tip of the iceberg when discussing the physical ravages of diabetes, depression is but the most visible diagnosis of how diabetes affects our minds.
I'm not talking about the temporary states of anxiety or paranoia, lassitude or somnolescence, that accompany our glycemic highs and lows, but the long-term, "you should get psychological help for this" effects of living with chronic disease in general, and diabetes in particular.

I am not doing what I should be doing to take care of my diabetes. I don't check often enough. I snack without bolusing. I never log anymore. I'm being a real slacker.
It isn't that I don't have TIME for this disease. Yes, I work part time. I attend graduate school full time. And I have a lot of other responsibilities like a very needy cat, a great boyfriend, and managing the usual parts of life. But I have time to check my blood sugar, take an injection, and log some numbers every week. I could be doing that right now instead of blogging and watching TV.
The thing is that I don't have the ENERGY for this disease. I stopped having the energy somewhere between year ten and twelve. A decade of diabetes wore me out. And almost two decades really has me down. It just isn't what I want to be doing on a cold, rainy Tuesday night. Especially when I have a slight headache and my eyes just want to close.

Many of us have been a-twitter about World Diabetes Day, bringing attention to the epidemic proportions of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and the Big Blue Test. Seattle had a bike ride as did Victoria, BC. Philadelphia had an event at the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. Those of us in the New York City area celebrated with a huge D-Meetup and pizza party. The indefatiguable Allison set things up in a Midtown office building. At its peak, over 20 Type 1s, Type 2s, and Type 3s gathered to enjoy each other's company and take part in the Big Blue Test.
