It had been more than a week since I had talked to Mom. This is nearly unheard of in our world, but it does occasionally happen. My busy life with three kids and their busy retirement life are the culprits.
So last night when Dad called to see if I knew about my brother's trip to Korea encountering problem after problem that eventually required him to come home to Missouri from Seattle, I was finally able to catch Mom up on what's going on in our lives.
"Did you know No. 2 has a double ear infection," I asked her.
"No, no didn't know that," she said.
"No. 3 is recovering nicely from her upper respiratory nastiness, but The Mr. is still battling a rough cough," I told her.

If nothing else, diabetes has provided me with stories to tell.

 

Like the time before diagnosis when I peed my pants.  Or the time I told a classmate if they weren't careful, I'd put insulin in their milk and make them diabetic.  Or the time I socked a kid who called a diabetic friend of mine "sugar-freak."  Or the times I've made a donkey of myself during a low.

Several weeks ago Dad's cousin and her husband visited from Missouri. After dinner we were having an engaging discussion about our family.

 

L's daughter is apparently something of a dare devil. L was telling us how she found out from her daughter's blog how she had done something dangerous (I think it was jumping off a cliff, but I'm not entirely certain). Mom jumped in joking that she has found out more than she wanted to know about me from my blogs and has learned not to read them anymore.

 

She looked at me almost mournfully and I suspected it was because she enjoys reading what I write. So to have to force herself to not read what I write so she doesn't freak out about what I'm saying is, I'm sure, difficult to say the least.

"The 'Diabetes Police' are everywhere, telling us what we may or may not eat or do, on pain of losing a leg, going blind, or -- G-d forbid -- dying like their father's great-aunt by marriage did thirty years ago."

• --"They" tell us we may not eat that nice, juicy bacon cheeseburger -- especially if it's accompanied by a plate of crispy French fries and a frosty tankard of microbrew ale
• --"They" tell us we may not drink anything other than tap water, or black coffee sweetened with Splenda
• --"They" tell us we must eat tons of cinnamon, bitter melon extract, and a myriad of other "cures du jour" that cure diabetes only in Halle Berry's pipe dreams

Dear Oprah,

 

I used to be a fan. I used to watch your show all the time. Probably every day. That was back when I was in school and was home by the time you were on.

 

After I got into the real world and started working, I rarely saw your show. And frankly when I did, it was pretty sensationalized. As a member of the media, I pretty much hate sensationalism. I may be in the media minority when it comes to that, but it's a direction that I simply can't stand our industry has gone in.

I generally consider myself to be fairly mature for my age. I've attributed my maturity to the experiences I've been through, mostly from dealing with a chronic illness from such a young age. It definitely puts a different spin on your whole life. You consider life as temporary, something to be cherished. You know you don't have all the time in the world.

 

Despite the maturity, I've still got growing up to do. There are things that diabetes and all my other experiences haven't taught me. I still have the passion and will of my youth to contend against on a regular basis. I'm holding on to pieces of that youth for good reason, seeing where maturity can change life for the worse in some ways.

Sometimes I think it's really hard to separate my life from my diabetes. I've been diabetic since before I can even remember so life has always involved this disease. Now that I'm over sixteen years in, it makes the separation even more difficult. How can I cut out the one part of my life that takes over every second of every day?

 

There was a time when that was easier. A time when I didn't follow every action or thought with something diabetes related. A time where most people didn't know that I was diabetic or see the results of my diabetes in my life. But sadly, that was a time with little control. It's a stage that I went through that I don't want to go back to.

This is a bit of a rant. I get on this horse periodically, ride it around, waving my flags and guns, foaming at the mouth a bit, going slightly nutty. You'll get used to it. Or ignore it.

What is the deal with lumping both types of diabetes together? Seriously. If I have to read one more freakin' article about how high fructose corn syrup causes diabetes or get one more stupid email from some clueless acquaintance, telling me that if I just put my kid on the Atkins diet, she'll be cured, I'm going to go to the top of the water tower and start picking people off. OK, maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but holy cow, does it make my blood boil.

Last year I had the fortune of being a part of a family retreat organized by JDRF of St. Louis. It was held at a hotel there and I believe it was the second one they've done. There were hundreds of kids and parents and it was a very successful event. Also at the event, there were guest speakers and various people and volunteers. They had a medical professional who discussed continuous glucose monitors and also updated everyone with all of the latest developments on the diabetes front. One thing that I really enjoyed, in addition to being a speaker, was the opportunity to meet other adults with type 1. It was something that I had never experienced before, a discussion in person with people just like me. I was blown away and it made my entire weekend unforgettable.

When to tell?

 

I have accepted a new job. It's in a new city (half way across the country!!). It's with new people. New people who don't know that I have diabetes.

 

It was during my four-year tenure at my current job that I was diagnosed. I had no problem telling just about everyone in my very small office about diabetes. I already knew them and their personalities.

 

It's different now. I have a problem with going in to the boss on my first day and saying, "Hey, guess what..." I also have a problem with waiting three months until my benefits kick in, or even longer when someone sees me checking my sugar (or doesn't know what to do if I pass out) to say, "Oh, yeah, maybe I should have told you sooner."
