I've been in a snit since my post about early burnout last week. I think it is lifting, but please allow me to vent all over the Blogabetes pages. By the way, snit is the technical term. (haha) It is defined as a state of agitation or irritation.
I had been doing very well with my food and glucose control and routines since my daughter was born 3 months ago. About a month ago I reached 40 pounds lost since her birth. I started thinking maybe I could win my lifelong battle with weight. I started reading more about weight loss, I signed up for several support sites, posted to forums. I logged my food on paper, sometimes online and sometimes in a spreadsheet. In other words, I went completely overboard.
Then I started eating more and justifying it by the fact that I was logging it. Somehow all the pressure I put on myself to perform, i.e. lose weight, just backfired.

Fitness for any single person, diabetic or not, has to be specific and individually appropriate. I am an ACE certified personal trainer. ACE stands for the American Council on Exercise. I have been in the gym business for many years. I have trained hundreds of people and helped or offered advice to thousands. I have worked in five different gyms over the course of my career and I have trained myself ever since I was about fourteen, basically ever since my body decided that it was time to become diabetic. I have been learning from my own experiences, as well as gathering knowledge from every source imaginable.

Information overload is a side effect of being a health writer. I often know too much about too many things. Symptoms start to seep into my subconcious until I convince myself that some minor irritation is a major illness. A simple rash is ringworm, a charlie horse is neuropathy, a side stitch is my appendix bursting.
I'm told medical students often have the same problem. The technical term for it is hypochondria.
Knowing that I'm prone to imagine the worst, I tend to avoid situations that will trigger this little bit of mania. The most important thing I've learned is to never read the sheets from the pharmacy that accompany my prescriptions. If headaches are a side effect of a particular medication, my head will start pounding before the pill has left my tongue. The same goes for gastric distresses, heart palpitations, night sweats, you name it. If I know about it, I will have it.

The relentless, all-consuming weight of it
The wishing it was different - I was different
And the realization that you play the cards you're dealt
I watch, most days silent, as it destroys people I love.
This beast.
And I wonder how many healthful, strong days remain for me.
I look into eyes so like my own
Mirrors reflecting the days behind - the mistakes
And the days ahead? - For me?

I went to get the mail today and found a package from Minimed. It wasn't the normal size box for Olivia's pump supplies and we've already received our Care Link doo-hickey (technical term, that - doohickey. The whatsit that you download pump info from. I think. I haven't actually used it yet. I keep forgetting....)
Anyway, inside the box was a brand new One Touch Ultra that beams blood sugar readings directly to Olivia's pump. Yay! I was all happy. I thought it would be great, that Olivia wouldn't forget about putting her blood sugars in, since the meter would do it for her.
Oh, how wrong I was. I gave it to her, all eager to see her reaction, since when the BD meter went away, she was very upset. But no.
"It's not green!" she exclaimed. "And it's not tiny." And she sort of flung it aside, sighing in exasperation.

A coworker asked me if I knew of a cake mix that was sugar free. She was asked to bake a cake for a friend who has diabetes.
That began the carbohydrate lesson.
"The thing is, although something may say 'Sugar Free' or 'Reduced Sugar' it may still have carbs in it which is what effects blood sugar. Sugar is included in that number." I did my best to not get too technical.
"Well I bought this one to try but I thought I would check with you to see if you knew of a better one," she said.

We came back to "Honey" 4 times in this exchange. I was going nuts.
Here is the deal, I am working at a church retreat in a few weeks and I was approached by the person in charge of food for the weekend regarding food choices. Apparently there are going to be some other people with diabetes attending the weekend and they thought they would get my suggestions.
