I started Symlin at 15 mcg last night at dinner. I had leftover meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans. Approximately 60 carbs with a high protein content. I started off a little low at 80. Alongside the Symlin, I took 5 units of Humalog. This was about 2 less than I would normally take.

 

Marvin brought me an unexpected ice cream treat after dinner, which I didn't bolus for because I was still showing and feeling on the low side. I ate about half (30ish carbs). My Dexcom sensor showed me to be rising slowly so I sat back and watched what the Symlin was doing (if anything).

I'm currently recovering from a fairly unexpected blood sugar of 49. It's the lowest I've been all week despite battling a multitude of lows. It really doesn't feel good. Especially after I've just finished an intense Jillian Michaels' workout (30 Day Shred) and just had to guzzle Coke and snacks.

 

Even before starting the Symlin on Tuesday evening, I was having lows at two odd times of the day. Morning and early evening after work. I'd wake up lower than I'd like, spike through the morning and afternoon and drop low almost immediately after leaving work. Symlin has only complicated this issue.

 

Today was the worst low of them all. After watching the Dexcom sit above 200 all day long, I had a salad with waffle fries for dinner. I bolused for the 204 prior to the meal on top of the fries and chicken. Then I decided to drink a Coke. 10 units of Humalog. An accurate bolus.

This morning was the first in the roughly two weeks that we've been in our new house that I actually had time to sit down at the kitchen table to eat a bowl of oatmeal instead of quickly slapping some cream cheese on a bagel and scarfing it down in the car during my one-hour commute. Let me tell you, bolusing while driving is not easy.

Yesterday I revealed to the world that Symlin is giving me tummy trouble, to put it mildly. Just for grins, I got on the scale this morning and I'm down 4 lb. since the weekend. Most of this, we can assume, is, ahem, water weight (bwahahahaha!).
Yesterday was better than the day before, but today has been worse. I'm not nauseated and my appetite continues to diminish, but my tummy is making terrible gurggly noises and sending me to the potty more than I'd like. At least once today I thought about emailing Dr. C to tell him I can't handle it anymore and that this is no way to live or lose weight. (READ MORE)

It's ironic that even the most obscure things we hope for can come true. I can't tell you how many times I've thought to myself how much easier it would be to lose weight (or manage my blood sugar) if I could just completely lose the desire to eat or if I could feel just a bit queesy all the time to discourage my mindless eating habits.
In contrast, I can't tell you how many times yesterday I said, "I'm not taking that damn medicine anymore." (READ MORE)

Nausea? Check.
Potty problems? Check.
Lack of appetite? Check.
Feeling full? Check.
Happy with Symlin? Check.
I know, you think I'm crazy, but really I'm not. Promise.
This morning I clicked up to the highest Symlin dose--60 mcg. And by lunch you know where I was. But, at least that aspect is subsiding some. I'm starting to realize more consistently what I really wanted from Symlin: the effects on my appetite and desire to eat.
Most mornings it's a struggle to choke down my oatmeal breakfast. And even more of a struggle to convince myself to have a snack mid-morning. Sounds miserable, you say? But this is a drastic change in my habits pre-Symlin. Lunches and dinners I'm seeing similar benefits, namely eating much, much smaller portions and not snacking before bed. Oh, get this: The Mr. suggested we go to Dairy Queen last night for some ice cream and I was nauseous just thinking about it. (READ MORE)

Happy World Diabetes Day! I am sporting my blue shirt and my blue circle pin today in honor of World Diabetes Day. So far, it's been a very uneventful diabetes day. My numbers have bounced like normal from great in the morning to high after breakfast and lunch. I'm wearing my Dexcom sensor today (finally received them, started last night) which has been very enlightening on where the spikes are happening.

 

As my latest A1c showed (9.1% in October), my numbers are not where I want them to be. I struggle with insulin resistance thanks to my PCOS and food has been my archnemesis for several years now. I cannot find a common ground with food...I'm either spiking too high or dropping too low. Carbs, how I loathe thee!

ADM logoIt's my time...to prioritize in my own way.

You may have noticed that diabetes hasn't been my first priority here lately. Not only is school speeding by faster than I can possibly keep up, my other health conditions are facing a lot of changes. Changes that I'm so ready for, but also not prepared for at the moment.

 

First, I'm starting birth control today after going off the progesterone almost two months ago. I'm hoping that the birth control will help with the premenstrual symptoms that I experience (like cramping, joint pain, headaches, and fatigue), without leaving lasting side effects (like weight gain, stroke, or pulmonary embolism). It took a lot to make the decision to go on it again, but I've made the decision and now I'm excited to see the results.

I have no idea why it didn't hit me until yesterday afternoon. I know what stress does to my blood sugars: it lowers them. They get pesky and no amount of carbs will bring them up. So as I was contemplating this weekends' low annoyances, it hit me. Stress.

 

Last week, my stress level definitely went up. The first round of tests started for the semester. I had group meetings and papers due. Plus I've been dealing with the medical stress that comes with changing treatments and making important decisions. All that added up to leave me with averages like 84 and 69 (over six hours of riding in the 60's).

 

So Saturday morning, I dropped the Lantus back to my original dose (14 units in the morning and 15 units in the evening). I'm still having a few lows (more than the week of highs), but I'm also seeing a mix of highs in there. Sadly, those highs are my own doing.

I had trouble explaining to my endo at my last visit why I don't always bolus prior to eating. So much trouble that I was painfully aware that she didn't have diabetes and didn't understand some of the tiny nuances that come along with this.

 

Lately the main reason I've delayed a bolus is because I don't always know how much I'm going to eat. And it really sucks when you think you're going to eat X number of carbs and then bolus and then wind up not eating that amount.

 

Sure, there are other times when I go into a meal too low to justify bolusing up front, but for the most part it has to do with not really knowing how my stomach will react to what I'm planning to eat.
