If by some miracle diabetes is cured, I shall name my next two children after the two cancer drugs that made it possible. We will adopt two Eastern European brothers and name them Gleevec and Sutent. I just hope everyone gets along.

The title reads "Cancer drugs halt type 1 diabetes in mice." My first response is: oh my gosh! How can this be??!??!! Then I read further. I can feel the emotions starting to get the best of me.
Do I break out in song? Do I start dancing around the room? Do I cry? What if this is it? What if this breakthrough is the one that we all have been striving for?
The article explains that research has shown two cancer drugs, Gleevec and Sutent, to halt type 1 diabetes occurrence in mice. It also says that up to 80 percent of the mice with type 1 diabetes went into remission from the drug. Eighty percent!

What if this was it? What if this was THE announcement? Where were you when you first heard the news?
We were in the living room. Susanne was sitting on the brown "site-change chair" with Charlie laying across her knees. She peeled the site off of Charlie's bottom while he resisted, elbowing her in the ribs and screaming, "break! break! break!"
Susanne begged him to be still.
And then suddenly everything stopped as we all became transfixed to the words coming out of Brian Williams' mouth on the television and the graphic over his left shoulder that said "Diabetes & Kids."
